SONIC DEATH MONKEY Soundtrack Reviews - Once

Once upon a monkey
by Michael Collins

Weíve all heard of date movies. Theyíre those movies that red blooded men run off screaming in the direction of anywhere where that movie isnít. So there are date movies, but is it possible to have a date soundtrack? The soundtrack to Once may just be it.

This album has date soundtrack written all over it. Not just that though, itís also the falling in love soundtrack. This is not a making out or getting nasty soundtrack. Itís the soundtrack to walks in the park during the autumn or barefoot at the beach at dusk. The soundtrack to laughing at the other person when you see ice cream smudged on the nose. Itís not for the lofty romance story Ė with or without a happy ending. Itís for the simple love story that feels terribly clichťd to everyone except for the people involved.

This is the soundtrack to meeting someone and falling head over heels for them. There are tracks with titles like Falling Slowly, If You Want Me and Fallen from the Sky. Itís music to reflect on those tender and exciting moments. At least thatís what a guy will say when his girlfriend asks about it. When that guy is around his buddies, heís only talking about that great hit in last nightís football.

These songs are mostly the acoustic kind of folky sound that gently, though not dispassionately, extols the virtues of another person. They also tell of this personís delicacy and vulnerabilities. In other words itís all those things that big guys arenít going to talk about anytime soon.

There are some nice jangle pop moments going on with the highlight for me being, Trying to Pull Myself Away. It has a good melody, a good rhythm to it as it bounces along and has a good big chorus. Best song title that Iíve heard for a while has to be, Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy.

Led by the movieís stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, they do a strong job conveying the rawness, restrained passion and complication of relationships. This is sort of the Irish version of the jangley indie thing that was big in the mid 80s and never really went away for some people. That includes me some times.

Well yeah sure sometimes Hansard's vocals get a little annoying when he starts to scream out like a hard drive about to burn out as he does in closing track, Say It To Me Now. I'll forgive him this time though since he sounds like he so means it.

In essence this is a nice little album of some semi lo-fi recordings that is great when you want to complement a nice romantic mood. Thereís some nice songs, and some strong performances that will appeal to those who like their songs based on a small acoustic combo with the occasionally add-on to keep things interesting.
