SONIC DEATH MONKEY Soundtrack Reviews - Iron Man

Iron Monkey
by Michael Collins

Should people flock to the Iron Man soundtrack like they've been doing to the movie itself? I don't think so.

Is this going to be bought by anyone other than fan boys who want to collect anything and everything that is related to Iron Man? Sure go see the movie, buy the comic, get the figurine, go see the movie again, stick up the poster, go see the movie again, but when you buy the soundtrack will the fan boy actually bother listening to it? From my earís perspective, not really, no.

This soundtrack is set up for me to dislike. While I certainly donít think the music is unsuitable for the film, this soundtrack doesnít translate into a standalone listening experience. Thereís too much of that dramatic action music. Maybe I should have just stayed the hell away from the soundtrack. But hey, itís the movie of the moment, and I wanted to cover it in SDM.

Ramin Djawardi keeps things rollicking along. Itís unrelenting deep jagged cellos and even some weighty electric guitars driving home the urgency. Which would be great if youíre feeling urgent, but I never am when Iím listening to a soundtrack. Iím more chilled out and hangin'. If I am in the mood for something a little more energetic then I tend to steer away from an orchestra. Just give me a couple of loud guitars, a crackiní tune and then Iíll be set.

So it took me to almost half way through the soundtrack until I heard a piece of music I could get into. The track was Golden Egg. It had a more subdued mellow start to it. It almost breaks into the frantic and loud style of the seven previous tracks, but this one keeps things in check, and it made it a stand out track for me.

Four tracks appear on the album that are not credited to Ramin Djawardi. DJ Boborobo provides a nice little hip hop beat that disappears just as I was realising how good it is. John O'Brien and Rick Boston provide a swinginí version of the Iron Man theme. Could this upbeat jazz track be any more out of place on this album?

Suicidal Tendencies provide a more or less spoken track accompanied by music called, Institutionalized, which get more and more crazy as it goes along.

Maybe youíll like it for youíre an SD fan.

That doesnít include me.

I would have left before the credits had finished rather than sit through this song if I hadnít been specifically told to sit through the small novel that is the end credits.

Then at the end there is Jack Urbontís rendition of the Iron Man theme. Itís more fun than Boston and OíBrienís version, but both are good.

I wouldnít waste too much time with this soundtrack. Thereís plenty more soundtracks to enjoy. If you really must have it, wait until itís a bargain bin item.
