SONIC DEATH MONKEY Soundtrack Reviews - Speed Racer

Go monkey go!
by Michael Collins

It's time to go to Speed Racer to see how the soundtrack performs.

Go Speed Racer! Go!

Ah I love the 60s kitsch of the original theme of Speed Racer. Can The Wachowski brothers do kitsch? Would you want them to do that?

Well in opening tracks, the actual theme itself is barely hinted at, and then it gets all big. It has that cartoony xylophone and flutes thing going, and then those revving up violins. Then the main theme kicks in. Itís sort of there and sort of isnít. Itís been modernized which is I guess is not such a good thing.

The track, Tragic Story of Rex Racer, is quite the sombre piece. It briefly sets these sombre tones and then it is out of there again as soon as it realises that this may be boring the kids. If the kids ever turn to this soundtrack in the first place.

Which they wonít really.

The nicely punned, Vroom and Board, gets things moving again as it suggests in its title. You can see the cars zooming along to this music. Right now, this is all about action music. True Heart of Racing, iís about action on the road. And action on the road means one thing:

Worldís Worst Road Rage is the best name of a track from a soundtrack Iíve seen Ė probably ever. But the track isnít as funny as the title. Itís in there and itís gone. With all these tracks that this album has; They are in there, make a statement (successfully or otherwise) and are out of there before youíve even got a chance to get out of first gear.

Not much more to say on this really. Itís all a bit rinse and repeat. Cartoony sounds, action sounds, oddly out of place sombre sounds, then repeat.

As was the case with Iron Man, this soundtrack will have limited appeal beyond the hard core fans who insist on having everything. Go look for the original theme instead.
