Stoya, one of the finest of Digital Playground's CHEERLEADERS
One of the best porn films of 2007 was Digital Playground’s Babysitters. Now, the studio and director Robby D. provide us with something of a sequel but more of a continued play on adolescent male fantasy with the title Cheerleaders. As in naughty cheerleaders who can be convinced to do things most of the cheerleaders at your own high school wouldn’t do.
Once or twice a year, the major studios like to get most or all of their big headlining contract girls together, maybe guest a girl from another company, and fill out the roster with freelance stars or promising newcomers. Cheerleaders breaks out (hold your breath for this): Jesse Jane, Shay Jordan, Sophia Santi, Adrianna Lynn, Stoya, Memphis Monroe, Alexis Texas, Brianna Love, Lexxi Tyler, Shawna Lenee, Camryn Kiss and Priya Rai. The lucky dudes are Tommy Gunn, Johnny Sins, Erik Everhard, Mick Blue, Manuel Ferrara and James Deen. All in all a pretty good cast with few weak spots. Showcasing all this talent and shooting it well guarantees you have a product that will remain of interest far longer than your standard porn flick, perhaps even win an award or two.
Composed of a series of vignettes (Jesse screws Memphis’ boyfriend, Memphis gets talked into shooting an internet porn video, several kids orgy in study hall, et. al.) and ending with all the girls going at each other in the locker room, Cheerleaders never feels like it has any filler, even though it’s nearly three hours long (spread over two discs on the standard version, with a single disc for the excellent Blu-Ray transfer). I don’t care how good the sex is, three hours is a long chunk of time to sit still for any movie. Luckily, Cheerleaders is engaging and fun and, as in most Digital Playground releases, the girls seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves (something not all porn can claim). Standouts are Jesse Jane, who has probably never shot a bad scene, Stoya, a newcomer already on the cusp of a memorable career who proves more magnetic with every appearance, and Adrianna Lynn, who has sadly severed ties with her contract girl status, though Digital Playground will always have a handful of her early performances to hold onto, and, if they’re canny, promote the hell out of. She’s simply that hot.
Not much negative, but I would have loved to see a Gossip Girl or Heathersesque plot about bitchy girls vs. nice girls or more nods to the high school social structure. As it is, there’s a loose framing sequence around the vignettes, but there could have been a fun story to go with the sex. And, despite the clear fetishistic appeal of cheerleading uniforms, we don’t really get an extended tease sequence which would have been appropriate. There’s more than enough for your normal red-blooded American male, though, and the formula of mixing good, hot talent with a fun scenario yields big rewards. I assume that next year Robby D. will provide us with YOUNG NURSES or HOT COPS or maybe even LIBRARIANS, and I, for one, will welcome it.
