|SONIC DEATH MONKEY Soundtrack Reviews - 21
by Michael Collins
Another 21 monkeys please!
The 21 soundtrack provides the best mix of indie pop tracks that Iíve heard in a while. A broad range of tracks come together nicely for make a nice mix which feels very 21st century.
The Rolling Stones with the help of mashup kings Soulwax open with an interesting version of You Canít Always Get What You Want. Those Soulwax guys have been doing a great job for years with their mashups and this is a nice cut and paste remix of the Stones classic. It takes a bit for me to get into a Rolling Stones song so this is a good effort by the Belgium duo.
MGMT do have a great version of Time To Pretend. Why is this song familiar to me? Another great 80s riff that we get to see again in the same way as Paris Is Burning shamelessly steals some 80s iconography.
LCD Soundsystem gives us a great indie lo-fi pop track with Big Ideas. This is a nice guitar up tempo dance number to dance along with. These guys keep on getting better and better.
D. Sardy and Liela Moss provide a nice slow burning beats number in the form of Giant. This track is a moody and sexy piece that blasts away in the chorus and is another top track from this album. Similarly Always by Amon Tobin is another chill out track with a hint of industrial action.
Young Folks has been one of my favourite indie pop tracks of recent tracks -The upbeat tempo and whistling riff. How can you beat a whistling riff and the dual Euro vocals? It all works wonderfully well.
Junkie XL lays down one serious funky track with Mad Pursuit with the help of Electrocute. Itís a slow hypnotic track that you will not be able to keep still to while listening.
In contrast to the rest of the album Aliens,í I Am Unknown, has quite a retro feel to it. With its Beach Boys harmonies and Beatlesque arrangement, this track is straight out of the 60s.
Rihanna shakes us out of the 60s with Shut Up and Drive. Itís all very modern pop and probably the worst for it. This is the least interesting track on the album. You do wonder why itís here.
Man of the moment Mark Ronson with Kasabian rounds off the highlights of the album with his signature modernised Motown sound in the track L.S.F.
The 21 movie was a disappointment, but the soundtrack is excellent. This soundtrack is not a high risk gamble for a purchase.
