|SxSW 2017 Interview: SATAN SAID DANCE director Kasia Roslaniec
by Jason Whyte
SATAN SAID DANCE at SxSW 2017
"SATAN SAID DANCE is an Instagram film in times of the selfie. A kaleidoscope of moments from Karolina; a scandalous writer obsessed with parties, drugs, sexuality and complex relationships, on her way to self-destruction. Karolina, 27, has three boyfriends, a sister who wants to be like her, and emotional ties to her parents. Yet her story is about egotism and loneliness. A film about how easy it is to focus on one's own ego and why egotists have such a need to see their reflection in the eyes of others? Is it a mistake to demand more freedom and strive for independence, when in fact we have too much freedom, and what we really need is a feeling of belonging?" Director Kasia Roslaniec on SATAN SAID DANCE which screens at the 2017 South By Southwest Conference.
Congratulations on your film playing in Austin at SxSW this year! Is your first time here and are you planning to attend your screenings?
Yes, that's my first time and I will be attending my screenings!
Great! So how did you get into this business?
I fell in love with a guy who told me he was a screenwriter. I decided to become a filmmaker too!
How did this project come together for you?
I was watching Dash Snow's album and I could see all the Polaroids all together, without any order, but the story of those people were there, and still is. Single pictures without any context make a portrait of them; no matter which was first and which was last.
What keeps you going while making a movie? What drives you?
What was your biggest challenge with SATAN SAID DANCE and the moment that was the most rewarding to you?
Set scenes in one order; it's impossible because those scenes don't have the order. You can set them however you want and it will always work, because there is no time. But I had to make one version to show in cinemas.
As this is noted as an Instagram film, tell me about the tech side of things!
It is shot in a 1:1 aspect ratio. We were watching a lot of Polaroids and Instagram pictures to understand the idea of square pictures. It is quite easy as the main object must be in the center. The rest is unimportant.
What are you looking forward to the most about showing your movie here in Austin?
I'm just happy to be here.
After the film screens at SxSW, where is the film going to show next?
The Polish wide release is set for May 5th and the film will travel around the festivals, but I can't say which ones due those press embargoes!
If you could show your movie in any theater outside of Austin, where would you screen it and why?
EVERYWHERE! It's a universal movie.
What would you say to someone who was being disruptive during a movie, like talking or texting?
Funny question! Nothing!
We have a lot of readers on our site looking to make movies or get into the industry somehow. What is the ONE THING you would say to someone who is wanting to get into the filmmaking business?
If somebody wants to get into that business he or she doesn't need to be told anything.
And finally, what is the greatest movie you have ever seen?
ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE.
