The Best Movie Article This Summer!"* (*And you can quote me on that!) by John Larsen, Ventura County Reporter

Criticwatch Creedo
Over the years at Criticwatch, we have kept a watchful eye on the critical community. Sure, there are several critics we don't agree with, but its not taste that makes you a whore. We can disagree seven ways from Sunday, but from the beginning this has always been about who you can trust. Some of the critics on our list are junket whores or scoop sluts; instantly untrustworthy if the label means anything. Others like "The Big 2" (Peter Travers & Kevin Thomas) seem to like just about everything and get their names in the papers more than the President. That’s why they now have their own awards named after them (“The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award” & “The Kevin Thomas Sloppy Seconds”)

For the past few years, we've left many name-names off of the list. Not because we're being hypocritical, but due to our belief that these people were (1) not whores and (2) didn't have the most unfathomable taste imaginable. Roger Ebert is the most recognizable name in the profession, so it only makes sense that he should be the most quoted critic in the game.

So taking into account that Roger Ebert should be your #1 (71 Quotes in 2003 / 71 in 2004) and the trademark "Two Thumbs Up" (67 Quotes in 2003 / 62 in 2004) is just as prevalent, see where everyone else ranks. Are we being too harsh? Or are they being too easy? (RED = The HBS/EFC Seal of Disapproval)

In the interest of fair play though, we are now going to be listing ALL multi-quoted critics. As we've always wanted, YOU can be the judge of whom you can trust, and we firmly believe that by listing these well-known names it only strengthens the case against the Travers', Thomas' and junket whores casting a dark cloud over the industry that we love and cherish.

PETER TRAVERS
(Rolling Stone)
Movie Reviews
(2002 Whore Ranking - #1)
(2003 Whore Ranking – The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award Created!)
(2004 – 61 Quotes)

Travers has long been the Rolling Stone film critic, but wasn't always a shill. For a long time he was a respected writer, but over he last few years it's become more and more clear that he's just out to get Rolling Stone some free publicity. Just like sports bonuses for achievement. Think about it.

Hollywood Elsewhere 2/4/03 (Movie Poop Shoot)
"Does Peter Travers win the flat-footed medal for all eternity? Has he ever written a negative review, or even a mildly critic one? Have you ever seen an ad for the worst movie ever? It'll have a rave from ROLLING STONE, dollars to donuts. I just assume if he likes it and the rest of the quotes are from some AM radio guy in Tulsa, that the movie sucks."Post-Production Polly

"Peter Travers is a wash as a critic now, and probably for all time. Any time his name is within 4 font-size points of the film title, blink and move on."Los Angeles-based indie filmmaker

An anonymous source is calling for the removal of Shawn Edwards - check it on in our forum (Help Remove Shawn Edwards!)

EGO TRIP ALERT
The Kansas City Star

Shawn Edwards is being teamed up with the bastion of intelligent film criticism, Average Joe’s Melana Scantlin. This is not a joke! Edwards has said that his stature as president of the newly formed African American Film Critics Association (at last check – 7 members) and his high visibility nationally as an oft-quoted-in-movie-ads reviewer, combined with Scantlin's star power, make for a formidable combination. “The quotes you read of mine, alongside Roger Ebert and all the top-notch critics, has totally helped my career as a film critic and my credibility,” Edwards says. “With Melana and I together now, it's almost like a national team.” It’s time someone took Edwards down a peg. The group can be contacted at (323) 969-4804 or info@aafca.com

QUOTES
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - A great movie! Very funny! Save room for Jim Carrey's name at the top of next year's Oscar Best Actor list. He's incredible. You won't forget this one.
The Ladykillers – Get ready to duck – the laughs come from everywhere!
Hellboy - The most exciting, genre-bending action film since the original Matrix
The Prince and Me - Julia Stiles is radiant and royal, a star to wish upon
Ella Enchanted - Seasoned with a little Shrek, a dash of The Princess Bride and a whole lot of laughs! The Princess Diaries' Anne Hathaway is exquisite. Ella Enchanted is one family film that will make the whole family feel happily ever after.
Walking Tall - The Rock is rock solid in Walking Tall
The Alamo - Spectacular! Thornton is Oscar-quality brilliant!
Kill Bill Vol. 2 - You don't have to see Vol. 1 to love Vol. 2. It's a great film all on its own. Grade A!
Shrek 2 – The colors are even brighter, the images crisper, the detail far more defined than the original Shrek just three years ago. But it’s not the technology that makes this a great film. A piece of genius…you’ll love it.
Raising Helen - Kate Hudson lights up the screen
The Day After Tomorrow - A perfect popcorn movie!
The Stepford Wives - It's a flat-out comedy - Funny!
The Terminal - The summer's great date film.

Spider-Man 2 - This is the best superhero movie I've seen.
Anchorman - Huge laughs...Nothing but funny.
I, Robot - A great movie! Ranks with the first Matrix. The spirit is true to Asimov's classic. Hits you at about a thousand miles an hour!
The Bourne Supremacy - On a scale of 007 This film gets a 10
The Manchurian Candidate - No one in the audience will be able to exhale during the last 30 minutes of this film. My advice: Go with someone who knows CPR! Ray - One of the best films I ever saw.
Vera Drake - This is a great film.
The Incredibles - The Incredibles? They could have called this The Amazings, The Terrifics or The Unbelievables and still wouldn't have been guilty of exaggeration.
The Polar Express - Amazing! You've never seen anything like it. No one has. An instant Christmas classic!
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason - You'll fall in love with Bridget Jones all over again. A laugh at the beginning, laugh in the middle, cry at the ending romantic comedy.
After The Sunset - A you'll-never-guess-jewel-heist caper that's everything it sets out to be.
Finding Neverland - One of the best pictures of the year. Johnny Depp gives one of the best performances of the year.
Ocean's Twelve - This gang of thieves stole my heart. It's so much fun
