The Best Movie Article This Summer!"* (*And you can quote me on that!) by John Larsen, Ventura County Reporter

CRITICWATCH CREEDO
Over the years at Criticwatch, we have kept a watchful eye on the critical community. Sure, there are several critics we don't agree with, but its not taste that makes you a whore. Well, sometimes it does. We can disagree seven ways from Sunday, but from the beginning this has always been about who you can trust. Some of the critics on our list are junket whores or scoop sluts; instantly untrustworthy if the label means anything. Others like "The Big 2" (Peter Travers & Kevin Thomas) seem to like just about everything and get their names in the papers more than the President. That’s why they now have their own awards named after them (“The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award” & “The Kevin Thomas Sloppy Seconds”)

For the past few years, we've left many name-names off of the list. Not because we're being hypocritical, but due to our belief that these people were (1) not whores and (2) didn't have the most unfathomable taste imaginable. Roger Ebert is the most recognizable name in the profession, so it only makes sense that he should be the most quoted critic in the game. NOT Peter "I like everything" Travers.

So taking into account that Roger Ebert should be your #1 and the trademark "Two Thumbs Up" is just as prevalent, see where everyone else ranks. Are we being too harsh? Or are they being too easy? (RED = The HBS/EFC Seal of Disapproval)

PETER TRAVERS
(Rolling Stone)
Movie Reviews
(2002 Whore Ranking - #1)
(2003 Whore Ranking – The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award Created!)
(2004 – 61 Quotes)
(2005 – 65 Quotes)
(2006 – 69 Quotes)

Travers has long been the Rolling Stone film critic, but wasn't always a shill. For a long time he was a respected writer, but over he last few years it's become more and more clear that he's just out to get Rolling Stone some free publicity. Just like sports bonuses for achievement. Think about it.

Hollywood Elsewhere 2/4/03 (Movie Poop Shoot)
"Does Peter Travers win the flat-footed medal for all eternity? Has he ever written a negative review, or even a mildly critic one? Have you ever seen an ad for the worst movie ever? It'll have a rave from ROLLING STONE, dollars to donuts. I just assume if he likes it and the rest of the quotes are from some AM radio guy in Tulsa, that the movie sucks."Post-Production Polly

"Peter Travers is a wash as a critic now, and probably for all time. Any time his name is within 4 font-size points of the film title, blink and move on."Los Angeles-based indie filmmaker

QUOTES
Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story - Marvelously entertaining.
Tsotsi - ***1/2. Remarkable
V For Vendetta - V packs an urgent filmmaking energy that pins you to your seat.
Thank You For Smoking - Acutely hilarious…This film will make you laugh till it hurts! This stinging satire is easily the best and wickedest comedy of the year.
Lonesome Jim - A deadpan delight! You’re in for something special! Finds its wily way into your heart.
l’enfant - A forceful, impassioned and unsparing triumph from
Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.
Inside Man - Pulsating excitement. The suspense crackles, the acting sizzles and the script keeps tossing surprises like grenades.
Brick - It pins you to your seat. A spellbinder! The stuff that dreams are made of! Cinematographer Steve Yedlin gives the film a seductive gleam of danger – just the thing to draw us into writer-director Rian Johnson’s tantalizing web. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is sensational.
Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! - The Beastie Boys bust out with the rock equivalent of a tornado!
The Devil and Daniel Johnston - Stunning! A passionate, haunting, and truly unforgettable story!
Friends with Money - Smart, witty and alert! A film that recognizes that money is the new sex. A movie rich in hilarity, heartbreak and a sense of life in all its vibrant, messy sprawl.
The Notorious Bettie Page - Mol is hot stuff! The first performance by an actress this year that deserves serious Oscar consideration.
United 93 - One of the most important, powerful and emotional films I’ve seen. A monumental achievement that stands above any film this year. Far from being exploitive, the effect is inspiring: This is he best of us. One of the most moving film experiences of the year.
Down in the Valley - ***1/2 Hypnotic and haunting. Harlan, played by Edward Norton at the top of his risk-taking game, is a cowboy with no O.K. Corral, just a stretch of the San Fernando Valley where he pumps gas for drivers off the crowded freeway. Harlan sees himself as Wyatt Earp, the gentleman marshal in My Darling Clementine. But he’s more like the California version of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver: caught between the life he dreams of and the one he’s stuck in. Writer-director David Jacobson, who did a dynamite job with Dahmer, isn’t afraid of plunging into dark, twisted places. You shouldn’t be, either. Down in the Valley is a wild thing that sticks with you long after it’s over. You know, a real movie. Jacobson questions the corrupting influence of mythmaking without ever judging his characters. Powered by contradictory impulses, his film is funny and dead-serious, poetic and plain-spoken, erotic and touchingly tender. Norton is a wonder to behold, catching Harlan in the act of inventing himself and crafting a performance to rank with his career-best work in Fight Club, Primal Fear and American History X. Down in the Valley dares you to explore the violence of the mind. Take the dare. It’s something rare these days: untamed.
Mission: Impossible 3 - This summer M:i:III is the movie to beat in the race to push your pulse rate past the danger zone.
Poseidon - It’s a blast. Poseidon hits the action button and never stops!
Wordplay - A brain bender! So suspenseful your palms will be sweating! It will have you howling!
Lemming - Mesmerizing! A wild, witty ride that will creep you out big time!
An Inconvenient Truth - It grabs you like a thriller with an ending that will haunt your dreams. Profoundly persuasive on a topic that’s scarier than anything in a dozen Japanese horror flicks.
A Prairie Home Companion - A gem! Funny and touching in unexpected ways. John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson are gut-busting hilarious.
The Break-Up - Vince Vaughn is the best friend a movie comedy could have. He’s hilariously funny.
Cars - Downright breathtaking! A class act all the way…Pixar does it again!
The Heart of the Game - There’s no denying the emotional force of this movie. It gets to you.
Superman Returns - Superman returns with a bang! Riveting and relatable.
The Devil Wears Prada - Sinfully funny. A party of a movie. Deliciously glossy. Streep’s performance is a comic and dramatic tour de force.
A Scanner Darkly - A wittily twisted vision…prepare for a major head trip.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest - You won’t find hotter action, wilder thrills or loopier laughs this summer!
Scoop - Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman, oozing killer charm, handle the sexual hijinks in style!
Miami Vice - If you’re looking for a crime story that sizzles with action, sex and the visceral jolt of life on the edge, Miami Vice is the one.
Quinceanera - A funny and touching tale. Lyrical and emotionally rigorous.
The Descent - Best scare flick of the summer!
World Trade Center - Nicolas Cage is riveting and resonant. Michael Pena delivers a performance of grit and grace.
The Illusionist - Mesmerizing fun! Edward Norton is at his best!
This Film Is Not Yet Rated - Swift, smart and hilarious.
Hollywoodland - Diane Lane is dynamite! Ben Affleck gives an award-caliber performance. Adrien Brody meets every challenge. Bob Hoskins is killer-good. Director Allen Coulter makes a truly exciting debut. Pungent and powerful.
Sherrybaby - Pure sizzle! A powerhouse of an actress! She is the real, riveting deal!
Little Children - Field shows his mastery. The films pulls you in like a magnetic force. A never-better Kate Winslet goes so deep into her character you can almost feel her nerve endings.
The U.S. vs. John Lennon - Lennon’s spirit, like his music, shines through this movie like a beacon.
American Hardcore - Raw and riveting! You can’t tear your eyes away from this explosion of sounds and images.
All the King's Men - Sean Penn is dynamite as Willie Stark.
The Science of Sleep - Gondry’s hallucinatory brilliance holds you in thrall.
School for Scoundrels - Uproarious…fiendishly funny! The laughs come with a sting! Thornton and Heder keep you howling. Jon Heder orbits past his Napoleon Dynamite character at last by getting seriously fierce! A hot and rowdy funfest! Ben Stiller is in top form.
The Queen - (1) Helen Mirren is acting royalty. An Oscar is long overdue. One of the best pictures of the year! Funny and touching in ways you can’t predict. (2) ***1/2 Helen Mirren’s performance is a crowning achievement. (3) Michael Sheen gives a sensational performance. The script, by Peter Morgan, is a model of elegance and bracing wit. The gifted Stephen Frears directs with an eye for telling detail and an ear for the emotions rolling under polite royal speech.
A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints - Beautifully portrayed.
Shortbus - An exhilarating trip!
The Departed - **** Triumphant! A new American crime classic from the legendary Martin Scorsese, whose talent shines here on its highest beams.
Sleeping Dogs Lie - Demonically funny and surprisingly sweet.
Flags of our Fathers - A film of awesome power and blistering provocation. An amazing feat.
The Prestige - Wicked clever. Christopher Nolan directs the film exactly like a great trick, so you want to see it again the second it’s over.
Marie Antoinette - Coppola works her magic again…Your eyes will be dazzled…
Babel - **** The year’s richest, most emotionally explosive film. A towering achievement.
Volver - (1) One of Almodovar’s and the year’s best. Enough said. (2) ****! Almodovar crafts one of the year’s best films! Cruz, never more voluptuous or vulnerable, is a force of nature.
Borat - **** A mind-blowing comedy classic…It will make you laugh till it hurts and you’ll still beg for more. You won’t know what outrageous fun is until you see Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen is a balls-out comic revolutionary, right up there with Lenny Bruce, Andy Kaufman and Dr. Strangelove. Cohen’s total immersion in his character is a wonder to behold. His performance is a tour de force that sets off comic and cosmic explosions in your head.
I Trust You to Kill Me - What gives this spellbinder a similar raw power is the way Boyer reveals the parallels between DeLuca and Sutherland.
For Your Consideration - (1) Catherine O’Hara is dynamite! (2) …O’Hara deserves Oscar consideration in her funniest, fiercest role. (3) Catherine O’Hara is comic perfection…Fred Willard and Jane Lynch are laugh riots.
Fast Food Nation - A firecracker of a movie that jumps off the screen.
Casino Royale - Casino Royale is the hippest, highest-octane Bond film in ages.
Apocalypto - Pure adrenaline! Breathtaking…Apocalypto brings out what’s unique and gripping in Gibson as a director.
The History Boys - Bennett’s dialogue sparkles and skewers with killer wit.
Inland Empire - ***1/2…Arguably [Lynch’s] most ambitious mind-bender yet…Laura Dern in a monumental performance…
The Good German - Haunting and hypnotic, it’s pure movie-going bliss.
Dreamgirls - The party of the year! Dreamgirls dazzles like nothing else anywhere.
The Painted Veil - The Painted Veil has the power and intimacy of a timeless love story…let it sweep you away.
Venus - Peter O’Toole gives a staggering performance. Fearless, defiantly untamed and in its own way a work of art.
Letters from Iwo Jima - **** Clint Eastwood’s epic Letters from Iwo Jima enters the Oscar race with banners flying.
The Pursuit of Happyness - He is the real deal...
Rocky Balboa - Stallone steps in the ring and every day is Christmas
Notes on a Scandal - If you want to see explosive acting, just watch Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett ignite. This is the bravest, riskiest role of Dench’s film career. It’s spellbinding to watch her blow the lid off.
Pan’s Labyrinth - Fires your imagination. Guillermo del Toro is the Hellboy of choice.

Great Moments In Junketeering #1: Shawn Edwards does Chronicles of Riddick

An anonymous source is calling for the removal of Shawn Edwards - check it on in our forum (Help Remove Shawn Edwards!)

**********SHAWN EGO ALERT**********
FROM THE COLUMN OF KANSAS CITY STAR’S HEARNE CHRISTOPHER (aka Shawn's Buttboy)
Shawn Edwards' Movie Awards
“The people who actually spend their money at the multiplexes get to vote. It’s not the critics groups that meet in a cave like Bin Laden and come up with all these choices that don’t match mainstream movie taste. We decided to let the people have their vote, because without them, Hollywood wouldn’t exist. Critics don’t drive Hollywood; people drive Hollywood.”

The Kansas City Star[/b]
“The quotes you read of mine, alongside Roger Ebert and all the top-notch critics, has totally helped my career as a film critic and my credibility,” Edwards says. It’s time someone took Edwards down a peg.

Help! Shawn Edwards Wants American Idol
Edwards Responds To Variety’s Timothy Gray
“Here's my deal. My job as a critic is to appreciate the whole spectrum of cinema. As a critic I'm allowed my opinion. I don't understand these guys. I think as a younger guy I have a wider appreciation for all types of film. I mean, everything is not going to be a ‘Citizen Kane.' But I've been quoted on two of the five movies nominated for best picture, too. So my taste can't be all that bad. I liked ‘White Chicks,' and that film did $75 million. I'm not ashamed. I also like ‘Million Dollar Baby' and ‘Ray.' But I don't like everything. I did not like ‘Sideways.'”

Edwards Quits KC Film Circle. Cites Jealousy On Members!
“They're not trying to support the totality of cinema and a diverse viewpoint,” Edwards says. “To me it's nothing but a big clique of film geeks — that's why I resigned. I'm not going to be a part of that. I don't need to be a part of a group that supports negativity.” “If they want to fire arrows at me, that's fine, but I think they're firing arrows out of jealousy and envy,” Edwards counters. “If I like a movie or don't like a movie, fine, who cares? Why are they so concerned over what my views are? I don't understand what's been done that's wrong. I mean movies and quotes go together like 7-Elevens and Slurpees.” The Film Snobs Respond To Edwards

And Edwards Responds Back
I give them credit, at least they're watching,” Edwards quips. “But obviously they didn't pay that close attention because we did a 10 worst (movies) last year and I didn't not like ‘Sideways,' I gave it a three (out of five).” (Editor’s Note: Upon review of the actual tape where Shawn reviews Sideways, he gives it a TWO out of five, NOT THREE!)

Criticwatch Reader Mark did - in response to what Hammond said about last year's Dark Water.

Peter,
C'mon..."Even Hitchcock could not have done better"?
Go watch Dark Water again (assuming you watched it the
first time). Now, find a mirror and TRY to look
yourself in the eye. Peter Hammond: Now there's a guy
who shaves with the lights off.

Dude, you've got some HUGE grapes...I'm sure Hitch is
turning in his grave.

Now, maybe you have a friend named Hitchcock and
that's who you're referring to. But if you're talking
about THE Alfred Hitchcock, you've either not seen any
of his movies, you know nothing about the craft of
movie making or you're smoking a hell of a lot of
crack.

Anyway, Alfred Hitchcock probably made better turds
than Dark Water. While I've never seen a Hitchcock
turd, I'm sure they had more in the way of plot,
character development and suspense than Dark Water.

By the way, when I googled your name, "quote whore"
came up. Hmmm...I wonder why?

Good Evening...
~mark

Quote from Miss Adams in the CNN piece on Criticwatch (08/28/03): "The expectation [of the studios] is that [reviewers will] come up with something quotable in one sentence," says Us magazine reviewer Thelma Adams. "It's part of the give-and-take." There are also the reviewers who "will say anything to get their name in the paper," she continues. "They won't go out of their way to write a positive review, but ... they'll play ball" for the glory of their own words in extra-large type, publication duly noted. "It's free advertising for your publication," she adds. “
