DAVID DENBY
(The New Yorker)
(2006 - 13 Quotes)

QUOTES
Go For Zucker - The characters, beautifully developed…are touching and slightly absurd at the same time.
Thank You For Smoking - Shrewdly entertaining satirical comedy…fast-moving and witty. The movie is a winner!
Brick - One of the most entertaining pictures to be released so far this year.
Russian Dolls - Irresistible!
United 93 - Stunning. A tremendous experience. United 93 fully honors what was original and spontaneous and brave in the passengers’ refusal to go quietly.
The Cult of the Suicide Bomber - Striking…
World Trade Center - World Trade Center is about courage and endurance as a function of family strength; very powerful. The world may not make sense anymore, but Oliver Stone, a warrior still, celebrating courage and endurance, has, in his own way, come home.
The Ground Truth - Mesmerizing. Emotionally potent.
Little Children - Extraordinary, sharply intelligent and affecting. Field works with such fluid grace and perception that the movie goes right to the top.
Blood Diamond - Spectacular. Exciting and stunningly well made.
Dreamgirls - The sigh you will hear across the country in the next few weeks is the sound of a gratified audience: a great movie musica has been made at last. We can tell from the easy fluency of the movie that Condon’s basic urge is to merge and join things, not to separate them. Again and again, he lets a declaration of love, an argument, a music-business event flow directly into the next moment, and then into the next, in an exhilarating organic structure with liquid joints. Dreamgirls fulfills the ecstatic promise inherent in all musicals – that life can dissolved into song and dance – but it does so without relinquishing the toughest estimate of how money and power work in the real world that song and dance leave behind.
Letters from Iwo Jima - A filmmaking triumph.
The Good Shepherd - One of the most impressive movies ever made about espionage. Masterly: swift, terse, but never rushed.

The Best Movie Article This Summer!"* (*And you can quote me on that!) by John Larsen, Ventura County Reporter

CRITICWATCH CREEDO
Over the years at Criticwatch, we have kept a watchful eye on the critical community. Sure, there are several critics we don't agree with, but its not taste that makes you a whore. Well, sometimes it does. We can disagree seven ways from Sunday, but from the beginning this has always been about who you can trust. Some of the critics on our list are junket whores or scoop sluts; instantly untrustworthy if the label means anything. Others like Peter Travers & reigning 2006 Whore of the Year Pete Hammond) seem to like just about everything and get their names in the papers more than the President. And we've named our awards appropriately (“The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award”, “The Kevin Thomas Sloppy Seconds” and "The Joel Siegel Bag of Douche Award")

For the past few years, we've left many name-names off of the list. Not because we're being hypocritical, but due to our belief that these people were (1) not whores and (2) didn't have the most unfathomable taste imaginable. Roger Ebert is the most recognizable name in the profession, so it only makes sense that he should be the most quoted critic in the game. NOT Peter "I like everything" Travers or Pete "I'm a whore named Pete too" Hammond.

So taking into account that Roger Ebert should be your #1 and the trademark "Two Thumbs Up" is just as prevalent, see where everyone else ranks. Are we being too harsh? Or are they being too easy? (RED = The HBS/EFC Seal of Disapproval)
