PETER TRAVERS
(Rolling Stone)
Movie Reviews
(2002 Whore Ranking - #1)
(2003 Whore Ranking – The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award Created!)
(2004 – 61 Quotes)
(2005 – 65 Quotes)
(2006 – 69 Quotes)
(2007 – 74 Quotes)

Travers has long been the Rolling Stone film critic, but wasn't always a shill. For a long time he was a respected writer, but over he last few years it's become more and more clear that he's just out to get Rolling Stone some free publicity. Just like sports bonuses for achievement. Think about it.

Hollywood Elsewhere 2/4/03 (Movie Poop Shoot)
"Does Peter Travers win the flat-footed medal for all eternity? Has he ever written a negative review, or even a mildly critic one? Have you ever seen an ad for the worst movie ever? It'll have a rave from ROLLING STONE, dollars to donuts. I just assume if he likes it and the rest of the quotes are from some AM radio guy in Tulsa, that the movie sucks."Post-Production Polly

"Peter Travers is a wash as a critic now, and probably for all time. Any time his name is within 4 font-size points of the film title, blink and move on."Los Angeles-based indie filmmaker

The Simon - Peter Travers Gets Stoned

The Lives of Others - The best kind of movie: One you can’t get out of your head.
Breach - Electrifying. Put Chris Cooper in the running pronto for next year’s Best Actor Oscar.
Zodiac - A mind-bending, nonstop mesmerizer of a movie. Gyllenhaal is expert. Ruffalo is outstanding. And Downey gives a blazing performance that runs the gamut from humor to heartbreak. David Fincher is a powerhouse filmmaker. Make no mistake, you will be hooked. Also creeped out big time.
300 - Prepare your eyes for popping – they just might fly out of their sockets!
Shooter - Shooter makes the grade as action escapism.
The Lookout - A knockout! Spellbinding! It spins a web that will pull you in. A thriller that really thrills.
Black Book - A tremendously exciting film that can suddenly, unpredictably move you to tears. There’s not a dull second in it. Provocative and potently erotic.
The Hoax - ***1/2 A devilish satire with mischievous wit. Director Lasse Hallstrom cleverly blends the details of Clifford Irving’s hoax with the American need to believe the tallest of tales.
Grindhouse - This tour-de-force gets you high on movies again! It’s the war cry of two rebels out to restore rude, crude vitality to a cookie-cutter film industry. Rich, juicy chunks of bravado, camaraderie, sex talk and pop-culture.
The TV Set - You’ll have major fun at this movie!
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters - Perversely entertaining…whups the *** of TMNT!
Disturbia - A nail-biter. Cool stuff. Cool movie.

Severance - The jolts are juicy and so are the jokes. This mischievous blend of The Office and Friday the 13th keeps things fierce and funny enough to give Steve Carell ideas.
Knocked Up - Hilarious in ways you have to see to believe! Knocked Up is the comedy of the summer, and maybe the year. That it goes deeper than that is a tribute to director Judd Apatow (The 40 Year-Old Virgin), who sure as hell knows his way around a laugh. When schlub Seth Rogen, in a star-making performance, lucks out on a first date with sexy Katherine Heigl, neither one of them expects him to hit a bull’s-eye. On such improbabilities, Apatow builds a knockout fable of modern immaturity.
Mr. Brooks - A mind-bender of a thriller with twists you don’t see coming!
Crazy Love - Michael Moore isn’t the only filmmaker packing enough heat to bust out of the documentary ghetto. Lores uncovers the dark heart of obsession. The electrifying result will blow you away. A shockingly fierce and funny spell-binder that leaves your head spinning.
Surf’s Up - Waves of thrills and laughs.
La Vie en Rose - For her stirring, soul-deep performance…Marion Cotillard goes to the front of the line for every Best Actress award out there…This movie gets it all. Marion Cotillard…gives a performance for the ages.
Ocean’s Thirteen - The movie is all heist, which Soderbergh carries off in high style.
Fido - Fiendish fun!
You Kill Me - A killer comedy!
A Mighty Heart - (1) Raw and riveting…Winterbottom exerts a grip that won’t let go. The film belongs to Jolie. This is by far her best performance, strong and true in every detail. (2) Jolie takes on her most challenging role and aces it.
Lady Chatterley - ***1/2 Spellbinding…As timely as it is thrilling to watch. In the expert hands of director Pascale Ferran, Lady Chatterley is a sizzler in every sense of the word.
Sicko - One of the year’s best. A radically fierce & funny fireball. You’ll laugh till it hurts.
Evening - A star-studded tear-jerker! The actors provide flashes of brilliance! Claire Danes in stellar. Mamie Gummer gives a star-is-born performance.
Live Free or Die Hard - …Terrific fun. You better believe that Bruce is still the man.
Ratatouille - A hilarious and heartfelt wonder! A new miracle in animation from Pixar…Unique and unmissable.
Rescue Dawn - A thrilling summer surprise
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - It will hook you and keep you riveted.
Hairspray - Hairspray earns knockout status for its humor, heart and high spirits.
The Bourne Ultimatum - The Bourne Ultimatum is a wow of an action movie that buries the competition and sets a new gold standard for thrills and smarts. We’ve waited all summer for a wild ride to grab us with more than jolts. Now it’s here. Hang on.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - Roaringly funny.

In the Valley of Elah - Tommy Lee Jones does the finest work of his career…Haggis goes for broke emotionally.
King of California - A gift!
Eastern Promises - A mesmerizing, power-punch of a thriller! Director David Cronenberg is a visionary! The bath house fight is a showstopper! Eastern Promises is Viggo Mortensen’s tour de force. Naomi Watts is extraordinary.
Into the Wild - One of the best movies of the fall season…An emotional powerhouse…Hirsch gives an award-caliber performance of astonishing depth and humanity. Eddie Vedder’s remarkable songs sound like the voice of Chris’ unconscious.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - Wow! One hell of a satisfying surprise. Artfully exciting and compulsively watchable.
The Darjeeling Limited - It’s more than one of the best of the year. It’s a movie you want to hold inside. The magically compelling Darjeeling Limited is the fullest blossoming yet of the gifted Wes Anderson’s talents as a total filmmaker. The acting is exemplary. Adrien Brody is revelatory. Owen Wilson skillfully blends humor and heartbreak, and Jason Schwartzman’s performance cuts to the bone…I love this movie.
Lust, Caution - Ang Lee’s potently erotic and suspenseful Lust, Caution casts a spell you won’t want to break! Tony Leung goes places he’s never been before as an actor. Newcomer Tang Wei gives a performance that will be talked about for years. Ang Lee is a true master.

Control - Remarkable!
Gone Baby Gone - ***1/2 A mesmerizing thriller. Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris are outstanding. Casey Affleck runs with his breakthrough role.
Things We Lost in the Fire - Benicio Del Toro is the movie’s force. He gives a performance you will never forget. He’s astounding. Halle Berry excels.
Dan In Real Life - A winner…Its characters manage to be romantic, hilarious and recognizably human at the same time.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead - A dynamite film that ranks with the year’s best. All the actors are first-rate: Hoffman continues to astonish. And Lumet’s direction dazzles. No way you won’t be knocked for a loop.
American Gangster - One hell of an exciting movie. They clash like titans. Denzel Washington is volcanic. Russell Crowe is combustible. Ridley Scott is on the top of his game.
No Country for Old Men - (1) This you do not want to miss! A spellbinder that builds unbearable suspense without losing sight of the story’s grieving heart. Joel and Ethan Coen make a blood connection with Cormac McCarthy’s novel about a shootout between bad and worse in West Texas, circa 1980. Tommy Lee Jones hits a new standard of rugged excellence. Josh Brolin gives a career-making performance. You’ll never forget Javier Bardem’s tour de force. Fierce and fiendishly funny. This classic-in-the-making is the Coen Brothers at the peak of their powers! (2) **** An indisputably great movie. A spellbinder that builds unbearable suspense. No Country offers an embarrassment of riches. Tommy Lee Jones shows the kinbd of wit and assurance that reveals a master actor at the top of his game. Javier Bardem is stupendous, a monster for the ages – an assassin who rivals Hannibal Lecter for dispatching his victims without breaking a sweat. This is Josh Brolin’s breakthrough – he rips into the role like a man possessed. Fierce and fiendishly funny…A new career peak for the Coen Brothers.
Lions for Lambs - Director Robert Redford walks the high wire with the defiant grace of a filmmaker who knows he’s battling the odds and is still up for the game.
Margot at the Wedding - The laughs come fast and furious and they’re sharp enough to draw blood…Nicole Kidman gives her best and riskiest performance in years…Jennifer Jason Leigh is pitch-perfect
Beowulf - ***1/2 Outrageously entertaining! Put on those 3D glasses and ride, baby, ride. Zemeckis springs so many 3D surprises you’ll think Beowulf is your own private fun house. You’ll be jumping out of your skin and begging for more.
Enchanted - Amy Adams is the wish your heart makes…she’s wicked good.
I’m Not There - An unmissable movie event. A feast for the eyes and ears. Cate Blanchett’s soon-to-be legendary performance is not a stunt, it’s some kind of miracle.
Starting Out in the Evening - A remarkable film! Langella delivers a master class in acting.
The Savages - Laura Linney, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Philip Bosco give award-caliber performances in Tamara Jenkins’ funny, touching and vital film.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - ***1/2 Nothing short of miraculous. A high-wire act of visual daring and unquenchable spirit. Mathieu Amalric’s performance defines the world extraordinary. Max Von Sydow is superb.
Atonement - ****. A crowning achievement. Written, directed and acted to perfection. Sweeps you up on waves of ravishing romance. A vision that will be talked about for years. A potently erotic spellbinder. Sex, lies and carnal fury spark one of the year’s best films. It speaks of what’s timeless about passion, art and redemption. Keira Knightley is sensational. James McAvoy is dynamic. They are heaven-sent acting partners. Vanessa Redgrave demonstrates what great acting is. Saoirse Ronan simply takes your breath away. Where Atonement is concerned, the only sin would be to miss it.
Grace Is Gone - Grace Is Gone will sneak up and floor you.
Juno - Hip and hilarious.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - John C. Reilly is insanely funny.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Sweeney Todd is a thriller-diller from start to finish: Scary, monstrously funny and melodically thrilling. For the holidays, Tim Burton serves up the sugar-plum tale of serial-killing barber Sweeney Todd, who slits the throats of his customers and then, with the help of bake-shop owner Mrs. Lovett grinds up the corpses and serves them as meat pies to a salivating if unsuspecting public. And Depp is simply stupendous. He erases the line between singing and acting, fusing them into something that keeps the movie blazing. Oscar, take note. Tim Burton’s sensational Sweeney Todd is a bloody wonder, intimate and epic, horrific and heartrending as it flies on the wings of Sondheim’s most thunderously exciting score. Burton is a true visionary, and with the help of cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, costume wiz Colleen Atwood and production designer Dante Ferretti he sets a new gold standard for bringing a stage musical to the screen. Burton’s use of blood is impressionistic, not realistic. But the prudes still whine about the R-rated violence. When did we become a nation of wimps? The darkly delicious Bonham Carter is funny and touching. As the film follows its tragic course, Burton scores an explosive triumph. Covered in blood, Sweeney is finally engulfed by his emotions, and Depp finds the character’s grieving heart. It’s a staggering moment in a spellbinder of breathtaking beauty and terror.

Criticwatch Reader Mark did - in response to what Hammond said about last year's Dark Water.

Peter,
C'mon..."Even Hitchcock could not have done better"?
Go watch Dark Water again (assuming you watched it the
first time). Now, find a mirror and TRY to look
yourself in the eye. Peter Hammond: Now there's a guy
who shaves with the lights off.

Dude, you've got some HUGE grapes...I'm sure Hitch is
turning in his grave.

Now, maybe you have a friend named Hitchcock and
that's who you're referring to. But if you're talking
about THE Alfred Hitchcock, you've either not seen any
of his movies, you know nothing about the craft of
movie making or you're smoking a hell of a lot of
crack.

Anyway, Alfred Hitchcock probably made better turds
than Dark Water. While I've never seen a Hitchcock
turd, I'm sure they had more in the way of plot,
character development and suspense than Dark Water.

By the way, when I googled your name, "quote whore"
came up. Hmmm...I wonder why?

Good Evening...
~mark

HEAR THE CLIP THAT GOT SHAWN FIRED FROM THE WALT BODINE SHOW
HE PLAYS THE RACE CARD AND LOSES
The Walt Bodine Show (June 30, 2006)
“Is it because I'm black?”

An anonymous source is calling for the removal of Shawn Edwards - check it on in our forum (Help Remove Shawn Edwards!)

**********SHAWN EGO ALERT**********
FROM THE COLUMN OF KANSAS CITY STAR’S HEARNE CHRISTOPHER (aka Shawn's Buttboy)
Shawn Edwards' Movie Awards
“The people who actually spend their money at the multiplexes get to vote. It’s not the critics groups that meet in a cave like Bin Laden and come up with all these choices that don’t match mainstream movie taste. We decided to let the people have their vote, because without them, Hollywood wouldn’t exist. Critics don’t drive Hollywood; people drive Hollywood.”

The Kansas City Star[/b]
“The quotes you read of mine, alongside Roger Ebert and all the top-notch critics, has totally helped my career as a film critic and my credibility,” Edwards says. It’s time someone took Edwards down a peg.

Help! Shawn Edwards Wants American Idol
Edwards Responds To Variety’s Timothy Gray
“Here's my deal. My job as a critic is to appreciate the whole spectrum of cinema. As a critic I'm allowed my opinion. I don't understand these guys. I think as a younger guy I have a wider appreciation for all types of film. I mean, everything is not going to be a ‘Citizen Kane.' But I've been quoted on two of the five movies nominated for best picture, too. So my taste can't be all that bad. I liked ‘White Chicks,' and that film did $75 million. I'm not ashamed. I also like ‘Million Dollar Baby' and ‘Ray.' But I don't like everything. I did not like ‘Sideways.'”

Edwards Quits KC Film Circle. Cites Jealousy On Members!
“They're not trying to support the totality of cinema and a diverse viewpoint,” Edwards says. “To me it's nothing but a big clique of film geeks — that's why I resigned. I'm not going to be a part of that. I don't need to be a part of a group that supports negativity.” “If they want to fire arrows at me, that's fine, but I think they're firing arrows out of jealousy and envy,” Edwards counters. “If I like a movie or don't like a movie, fine, who cares? Why are they so concerned over what my views are? I don't understand what's been done that's wrong. I mean movies and quotes go together like 7-Elevens and Slurpees.” The Film Snobs Respond To Edwards

And Edwards Responds Back
I give them credit, at least they're watching,” Edwards quips. “But obviously they didn't pay that close attention because we did a 10 worst (movies) last year and I didn't not like ‘Sideways,' I gave it a three (out of five).” (Editor’s Note: Upon review of the actual tape where Shawn reviews Sideways, he gives it a TWO out of five, NOT THREE!)
