The Gameplay and Camera angles on this game are so frustratingly poor or nonexistent, that after only completing roughly 5-8% of the game, I am returning this pixelated abortion as soon as humanly possible.

Gameplay- similar to the far superior Spider-Man 2 and Hulk Ultimate destruction- Superman is a free-roaming platform where Metropolis is your oyster. Not much time to explore the city though as there's shit going down every second, and to my knowledge you can't afford to let anything go as the city's damage becomes your own. The graphics are somewhat laughable anyway, and the city doesn't really do much for me like Spidey or Hulk did.

Superman has series of moves that can be accessed primarily with the X- Button- but there are other combos- pity that only a fraction of them are effectual- when Superman lays the smack down, the game annoyingly shifts into some sort of half ass Bullet-Time- but the moves come fast and furious, and several combos requiring more than two buttons never came to fruition as Kal would simply start to punch or throw based on the first one or two buttons- what good is bullet time if its not going to give the player the requisite reaction time to perform combos? Horseshit.

Superman can fly- but his targeting is only good about half the time- most of the time you will be spitting expletives as you overshoot your targets and wind up halfway across the city whilst the bad guys burn down the infrastructure in your absence. Superman is most effective when running around on the ground- his lack of focus when in the air causes too many misses unless you use his energy powers like heat vision or cold breath- which fail to do much to many of the villains you are required to battle- the moves are meant more for more mundane crisises that crop up like building fires and meteors.

Camera Angles- oh just forget it. A punch here, a dodge there, and you'll go from a close in third person view to a faraway bird's eye shot as the rest of the screen revolves away- again, this makes flying exceptionally difficult with any degree of accuracy in combat, and allows for maybe one or two regular punches before you just submit to button mashing and playing with the analog stick to get back to a useful perspective.

I could go on but why bother? This game blows, particularly with two superior free roaming superhero games out there in the form of Spidey and Hulk (four if you count Ultimate Spider Man) that have their shit together in graphics, perspective, and most importantly, gameplay.

My wife was very upset as this was a gift to me- I had to explain that it had nothing to do with her kindness and everything to do with shitty design and useless bells and whistles. Now you made my wife feel bad Superman. Fuck you.

AGH. Between this and two used but defective versions of Knights of the Old Republic II, I'm ready to smash the box.

But first I'm going to try and recoup a few bucks of this fucking lame Superman game that my wife bought new and paid full price for. GAAAH!

Heh. You know what Grinch? That's not a bad idea right there.

Gotta say though, I'm not up on my forum lingo- what's LMBO mean?

Also, considering your icon, I've been curious as to your thoughts on the made for cable Preacher series that's been announced- excited? worried? thoughts?

yep, laughing my balls off (i like madlibs internet lingo)

I would be worried, but Preacher is being developed by HBO, and they have some pretty mad quality control. They ditch more good shows than they have bad ones. So, even though it's being written by the guy who wrote Daredevil, I'm hoping HBO keeps him in check.

wasn't planning on even renting it (as much as I loved the movie, I find most video game spin-offs to be little more than hastily cranked out tie-in product in which the gameplay and graphics suffer accordingly), but thanks for the hilarioius critique. Sounds kinda like Dead Rising, which I also hated due to frustrating time limits and new tasks constantly being thrown at you via an agrravating cell phone that rings every 2 minutes. Oh, and not to mention the fucking SEA of constantly regenerating zombies. You couldn't even keep an area cleared out for 30 fucking seconds. ugh.

Rent Gears of War or Lost Planet instead. Have been having quite a bit of fun with both so far.

I've never been a member of the 'we should do video game reviews too' crowd on HBS.

But I must say, if video game reviews were like this one, I'd be totally down with it.

And let's face it, half the games given any sort of press are either based on movies or movies will soon be based on them...

Perhaps we could review "movie-related" video games only.

As in, movie tie-in games (Superman, LOTR, Irreversible) or those new-fangled "retro" games (Reservoir Dogs, Scarface, The Godfather, The Legend of Zelda LXI: Caligula Strikes Back).

Or perhaps not. I'm going to Sundance tomorrow. Leave me alone.

Movie related video game reviews, great idea!

Check out the Angry Nintendo Nerd...this guy is hilarious, more so if you remember these shitty games he's bagging on:

Wait, there's an Irreversible video game?
