ANDREW SARRIS
(The New York Observer)
(2003 - 12 Quotes)
(2007 - 20 Quotes)

QUOTES
The Italian - Quite simply irresistible entertainment!
Amazing Grace - **** I was genuinely moved. A remarkably gifted cast provides inspirational nobility and comic eccentricity!
Maxed Out - A long overdue swipe at the shamelessly predatory tactics of the credit card industries.
Summer in Berlin - You won’t encounter many movies nearly as good this year from anywhere!
Away from Her - Exquisite I have seen few films in recent years as emotionally engrossing and edifying. An electrifying performance by Julie Christie.
The Treatment - The Treatment, based on the novel by Daniel Menaker, turns out to be romantic sleeper of the season: A gifted acting ensemble down to the smallest parts, a good mix of whimsy and intelligent discourse, with just a touch of fantasy that never engulfs the narrative. All in all, The Treatment is a welcome relief from an otherwise dismal movie season.
Once - A truly magical Irish musical…a wondrously affecting achievement…Hansard and Irglova make beautiful music together on the screen both literally and figuratively. Don’t miss Once. It has to be seen and heard to be believed and enjoyed.
You Kill Me - ***1/2! Hilarious and outrageous. Ms. Tea Leoni is even more impressive here than Ms. Linda Fiorentino was in The Last Seduction!
My Best Friend - Hilarious!
Summer ‘04 - Marvelous!
3:10 To Yuma - The performances of Russell Crowe and Christian Bale alone are worth the price of admission.
In the Shadow of the Moon - Moved me as no other movie has moved me this year. Everyone should see it!
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - A modern masterpiece! The most compelling psychological drama you are likely to see this year.
Feast of Love - **** Robert Benton’s Feast of Love serves admirably as a playful respite from the Iraq-war-driven flood of media violence that threatens to engulf us with a perpetual hangover of hopeless paranoia. With the help of an exemplary cast, they have fashioned an exquisite tapestry of interlocking love stories.
Meeting Resistance - I think it is time to take a film like Meeting Resistance very seriously, and to ponder its message very carefully.
American Gangster - One of the most dramatically explosive gangster movies in years.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Spectacular. Astonishngly lyrical and profoundly moving. Life has never been so richly ennobled on screen as it is here.
Atonement - ****. An enduring cinematic masterpiece. It gives me renewed faith that good and great movies can still be made.
Juno - **** A buoyant comedy from start to finish.
The Great Debaters - ****! The Great Debaters is marvelous entertainment you should not miss.

TY BURR
(The Boston Globe)
(2007 – 11 Quotes)

QUOTES
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - …a lot cleverer than Scream.
The Last Mimzy - Hits the sweet spot with a satisfying cosmic bang. It’s a cross between A Wrinkle In Time and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Once - ****. There are more emotions repressed then sung out in this transcendent new Irish film than in a year of blockbusters, and in its brief running time, writer-director John Carney does something both profound and unexpected: He reinvents the movie musical as a genre of swooning rock ‘n’ roll realism.
Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman - Very much a bookend to Vera Drake in its mixture of post war British reserve and ugly reality. Spall makes it work, creating a little man with big and terrible secrets.
Crazy Love - A great movie. Crazy Love scrapes away the cartoon exterior around this story and peers into the unknowable murk of the human heart.
Talk To Me - Immensely entertaining! Don Cheadle is hotwired. The delight is infectious.
No End In Sight - It breathes fire with its lucid, unblinking condemnation of the current administration’s policy failures.
Death at a Funeral - A comic explosion
Eastern Promises - Viggo Mortensen burns a hole in the screen. A performance of almost unbearable tension. The fight scene, set in a Russian steam bath, is an instant movie classic.
Bee Movie - Terrific!
I’m Not There - ****

(2006 – 12 Quotes)
(2007 - 14 Quotes)

QUOTES
Snow Cake - Witty and clever! Full of unexpected moments.
Waitress - Triumphantly feminine.
Nancy Drew - Nancy Drew is a refreshing turn in a positive direction.
Broken English - It feels like something brave. A wry, charming romance that avoids the usual single girl clichés and displays a level of emotional honesty and character development that’s confoundingly rare these days, especially for female characters.
Rescue Dawn - An extraordinary story of survival.
Talk To Me - Fresh and revelatory!
Live-In Maid - Wonderful!
Superbad - The movie’s appeal leaps across generations in a single bound…it aims to express what it’s like to stare down the barrel of your first foray into adulthood, and it’s not afraid to be honest about it.
Rocket Science - Crackles with dialogue that’s sharp, brainy and exhilaratingly articulate
Eastern Promises - Expertly realized.
Sleuth - Language this lethal has all but disappeared from the movies, and it’s an unmitigated pleasure to observe. Caine and Law attack with such ferocity. Sleuth is nasty fun.
Southland Tales - Southland Tales is a political farce, a noir doomsday chiller, a paranoid fantasy, a Saturday Night Live sketch on acid.
The Savages - One of the best movies of the year…told with uncommon humanity, wit and humor…The Savages is singularly funny and seriously moving.
Juno - As entertaining as it gets.

STEPHEN SCHAEFER
(Boston Herald)
(2007 - 12 Quotes)

QUOTES
The Lives of Others - ****!
Bug - One of the most disturbing horror movies imaginable.
La Vie En Rose - I’ve seen the first shoo-in for next year’s Best Actress list: The stupendous, heartbreaking Marion Cotillard whose Edith Piaf is nothing less than monumental, a performance for the ages.
Introducing the Dwights - Brenda Blethyn gives her greatest performance since Secrets & Lies. Nothing less than exhilarating…fresh and heartbreakingly real.
My Best Friend - Unexpectedly funny!
Resurrecting the Champ - Astonishing. Intelligent. This intricately constructed story of fathers and sons has a genuine resonance and reason rare in movies.
September Dawn - Paints an incendiary portrait…of a paranoid religion.
Mr. Woodcock - Mr. Woodcock zings with its nearly nonstop, crude humor
Trade - Kline is a standout.
The Heartbreak Kid - One of the raunchiest movies this side of Superbad or Knocked Up.
Gone Baby Gone - To put it simply, Gone Baby Gone is stupendous. There’s not a false note in it. It grabs you and packs a punch. Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan are extraordinary.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead - A nervy piece. The modern version of a Greek tragedy.

Diggers - A terrific movie. Paul Rudd is sweet and funny, Ron Eldard and Josh Hamilton are great and Ken Marino is riotously funny.

STEPHEN REBELLO
(Playboy)
(2007 - 6 Quotes)

QUOTES
Shoot ‘Em Up - This new breed of action thriller hits the bull’s-eye. Insanely dark, funny, twisted and sexy.
The Kingdom - The Kingdom gets audiences cheering! A rare hybrid of balls-out gunplay, explosions and hair-raising chases powered by an unexpected, hugely welcome dose of smarts.
The Darjeeling Limited - Anytime Wes Anderson is in the driver’s seat, the ride is worth taking.
Michael Clayton - Sharp, smart, tense and superbly acted.
Juno - A whip-smart screenplay by Diablo Cody, super sharp direction by Jason Reitman and a peak-performing cast ought to make this film-festival favorite this year’s Little Miss Sunshine-size surprise.
Atonement - ****. A big, lush, exhilarating movie. It would be criminal to spill any more about the plot twists and turns of this sweeping epic that at times recalls the work of David Lean. James McAvoy is so compelling. Gripping, brilliantly made and grown-up.

The Last Mimzy - Wholesome, eager entertainment that doesn’t talk down.
The Hip Hop Project - Vibrant and soulful.
9 Star Hotel - Fascinating.

Joshua - Sam Rockwell’s spectacular turn…is never less than convincing.
Arctic Tale - Stunning
Primo Levi’s Journey - Vividly impressionistic and delightfully curious!
Dedication - Filled with exceptional acting…Mandy Moore is soft & appealing. Billy Crudup is seldom less than mesmerizing.
