Rewatched "Dawn of the Dead" for the umpteenth time last night; and, no, I don't mean Zack Snyder's crapfest...

http://efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=8887&reviewer=327

...and it hit me that this is possibly the best opening scene in film history, the one inside that frenzied TV studio.

The editing and timing are sensational, humor and horror are well-etched early on so the film has a consistent comedy-chiller tone (which is no small feat considering how many directors foul up on this), and there's a primal immediacy that helplessly envelops you from the word go.

Thoughts?

Kubrick was the master of opening scenes. A Clockwork Orange is probably the best.

Good one; and so is his one for The Shining with that incredibly eerie music score.

A less showy one that I often cite is the opening scene of Quiz Show, which basically encapsulates the movie's themes in a scene with Rob Morrow shopping for a car.
