It's about frigging time. I was just dumbstruck that the network even remotely thought that the show would have even an inkling of interest and staying power after Ebert's departure. I mean, sheesh, I participate in just as good movie debates at the coffee shop every morning.

(By the way, Siskel gets my vote even though I disagreed more with him than Ebert because he almost always backed up his cases better.)

Whoops, I just put another link about the cancellation on the TV topics forum! I always watched the show, even with the Bens, but it wasn't the same without Siskel and Ebert.

Did it bother anyone else that after Ebert was gone that the next two duos were strictly all white men? Why not fey Rex Reed and martinet Armond White? Or Carrie Rickey and Owen Gleiberman? Etc.

A producer somewhere probably remembered the nightmare pairing of Rex and Dixie Whatley from many years back...

Sad

Yeah, it was definitely sad when a pseudo-critic like Bill Harris, who Dixie replaced, was preferable!

Mad

While I enjoy Ebert's reviews, I preferred Siskel just because I agreed with him more often when I saw a film.

I just loved it when he criticized the hell out of The Silence of the Lambs. And his shocked demeanor at Ebert giving Cop and 1/2 a thumbs-up was also priceless. A big difference between the two is that a lot of times Ebert would recommend a film based on its intentions, while Siskel would stick it to that film if it didn't actually deliver on those intentions. And I just love his take-down of Dune:

Just caught that. Crap writing - it makes it look like Ebert didn't have a show from 1986-2007.

So due to this thread I've spent most of my day happily re-watching many of their reviews and I'm saddened at how there really isn't anything that's replaced them- granted, it would be difficult to do so, but for review shows to fail at it so badly. I also watched one Siskel/Roeper review but alas it lacked the sparks of the veteran team, Roeper seeming to prefer generously nodding to his superior but bringing little to the table. Jack said it best:

"a lot of times Ebert would recommend a film based on its intentions, while Siskel would stick it to that film if it didn't actually deliver on those intentions".

This is one of the first times I noticed how sentimental and forgiving Ebert can be if the film tries hard enough and how unforgiving Siskel's judgements can land. They're not perfect- one thing that always bothered me is what types of minutae they focused on, particularly in genre films like "Batman" where they sometimes missed the point of the comic or how superheroes work in general, or how Ebert couldn't put his full weight behind "Aliens" because it upset him too much... even though it earned a thumbs-up.

Good examples, though as they go to three per page it took me a second to realize that Ebert was not going to find any message from "Beetlejuice" that he felt merited a positive review.

And for pure fun's sake- one of my favorite extemporaneous debates between the two- Siskel's grammar versus Ebert's eating habits- this never fails to have me in tears, but the nice thing about it is that unlike some of their meaner fights, this one is done with love:
