His 1990 "Q and A" still remains my favorite New York crime tale; and I still think "The Morning After" is pretty underrated while "Running on Empty" afforded both Christine Lahti and River Phoenix career-best roles. Oh, and even though the screenplay is riddled with logic loopholes, Paul Newman gave his best performance in "The Verdict".

Serpico and 12 Angry Men rank amongst his best.

Dog Day Afternoon and Network are solidly well made, but have aged significantly.

It really wasn't until "The Morning After" that he displayed a really acute visual sense. Unfortunately, it didn't last. I know he wanted his New York crime tales to be "gritty", but that didn't necessarily mean that they should be almost completely devoid of visual flavor.
