heh, that was fun. I also liked the companion piece: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=1&cId=3145154

Seriously, the 360 is gonna be huge. Now that I've seen it and played it and seen all the shit it can do, I'm convinced it's going to be massive. Call of Duty 2 is one of the most incredbible things I've ever seen, and the best shooter since Halo 2.

Now if MS would stop wasting everyone's time with those fucking core systems, and get the product on the shelves faster, we'd be getting somewhere.

Tell ya what McKay- After a few levels on Half Life 2, I'm starting to see the fuss vs. Halo 2. Much, much more environmental interaction with seamless storyline intertwinement with ongoing action vs. cutscenes, and some good problem solving skills that don't detract from gameplay or take you completely out of it with irritating minigames. Me likey.

As for 360, well, I just saw a vague poster up for Halo 3 at a local mall during some holiday shopping, swore loudly, and am now figuring out how to budget the imminent purchase. But honestly, the regular X-box has a lot of juice left in it with the bumper crop of games out, so I really don't want to have to go 360 if I can help it.

Trust me man, once you play an hour or so on the 360, you'll have its hooks in you. It's a whole new experience. I played it at a buddy's house a couple of weekends ago, and his wife and my girlfriend were like "it's just like every other first person shooter ever made". WRONG! I don't know how to explain it, but my friend summed it up best - "I feel like I'm actually shooting, and like my bullets are actually hitting something, not like I'm just firing a virtual gun at a bunch of zeros and ones.". It really does have a different, more visceral feel to it. Plus it looks and sounds fucking gorgeous.

Yeah, Halo 3 - gonna be huge.

You mean her wallet. heh.

Lest I omit pertinent info, however, who do you think bought me Half Life 2, and hey, the X-box was a joint decision we reached when we went out one day to buy curtains, didn't like anything, got bored looking for curtains, and then went and bought an X-box instead- still wrapping my head around that one. A truly superior woman with an excellent system of values.

Anyway, long story short, she might be into the 360 but both of us are of one mind that there's just not that much of a draw with the limited library, possible system glitches, inavailability, PRICE of console, PRICE of games, and the continuing quality performance and choices our current X-box offers. I'd rather get a fish tank at this point, and keep my old console.

Plus, she could give a rat's ass about Halo 3. Will there be any backwards compatibility to your knowledge?

A woman who agrees to buy an xbox instead of curtains? My friend, you have truly found Kismet.

yeah, there's *some* backwards compatability. MS has a list of games that are BC, and it will be updated as more developers come out with the software emulators that will make their old games work. Here's a link to the list: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

Naturally the Halo games are on there, and I hear they look pretty good on the 360. Right now, I'm trying to play through every xbox game left on my must play list because I'm going to trade it in when it comes time to get a 360. It still has a decent lifespan left, but there are fewer and fewer upcoming games for it as developers shift gears and move to the 360. I'll be surprised if any new titles for it are announced after this quarter.

Nice. Very nice, though I have concerns about this "Software emulator for every game you try to bring over". Also, my original question was actually asking if Halo 3 will be playable on the old console, or 360 exclusive only. I think the answer is the latter, but you follow this stuff a lot closer than I.

Oh yeah, Halo 3 will definitely be a 360 exclusive. It's their killer app that they're keeping up their sleeve until the PS3 launch.

the Emulator thing is no big deal, it just has to download it once from Live when you put the old game in, and you're done. I'm just pissed that the Mechassault games aren't on there (yet).

Ah. So I would still have to purchase X-Box live to enjoy backwards compatibility. Fiendish. I guess no bassackwards compat for me.

You play video games and yet somehow have a girlfriend? J/K. You must have a very cool ladyfriend. I can't even think about playing PS2 around my woman.

actually, she hates them Smile Just my luck. But at least she's not trying to make me quit them or anything. That would be like someone trying to make me to get rid of my porn collection - and that shit just won't fly.

Provided you budget your time, I don't see any reason why anyone should make you quit any enthusiasm. Hell, I might understand if you were at it for like 8 hours to the exclusion of everything else, but honestly...

Hell, my wife's only caveat is that I not play over her TV shows, so I either move the X-box downstairs or upstairs depending on where she is, and vice versa.

I also am not allowed to play Warcraft on her laptop if she wants to play. But hey, its her laptop and mine doesn't have the memory for it, so that's pretty fair. Actually she just ported some memory over from her old laptop to mine today, because she wants to get online and play against me now that she's dusted Warcraft III and is on the Frozen Throne expansion set. Man I do love this woman.

I tellya, we're having a helluva good time co-playing X-men Legends II also- that is one fun fucking game.

Okay, just for shits and giggles, brief rundown of what I've played on the Trip-60 so far:

Call of Duty 2 - Beautiful, fantastic, violent, immersive, and intense. The first ww2 shooter that really makes you feel like you're in the middle of the shit. Amazing graphics, score, sound effects, etc. Best shooter since Halo 2. - *****

Quake 4 - Pretty nice graphics and lighting, but the framerate is sluggish and choppy, and the game itself is pretty mediocre. If you've played any of the previous Quake or Doom games, not much new to see here - ***

Condemned: Criminal Origins - Okay, first off, the graphics are PHENOMENAL. Closest thing I've seen to "photo-realistic" in a video game. You play an FBI guy chasing a serial killer through all of these creepy old abandoned locations. There's the occasional stopping to gather clues, but mostly it's slugging it out with all kinds of squatters, addicts, gang members, and mutants. There's some gunplay, but the game is real skimpy with guns, so most of the time you just have to pick up whatever is laying around and start bashing heads with it. The enviromnents are beautifully done, and it has a very distinct "Session 9" vibe to it (there are even a few homages to the movie IN the game, if you look closely enough). My only complaints are that the game is too short and the guy who does the lead character's voice is annoying as fuck sometimes. Still, a solid game overall - ****

Perfect Dark Zero - Well, it ain't perfect. In the plus column, the graphics are gorgeous, although at times everything looks just a little too glossy and polished. But for a mediocre first person shooter, it looks damn good. It has a nice variety of weapons and a decent little "cover" system that allows you to hide behind most objects and shoot without exposing yourself too much. BUT, all the enemies in this game are ridiculously hard to kill without the head shot. Sometimes you have to empty a whole clip into a motherfucker to put them down. I know Kevlar is a wonderful thing, but C'MON. Also the story is nonexistent, there is no jump ablility, and the girl who does the lead character's voice sounds very vapid and immature and annoying. Imagine Paris Hilton as an action heroine, and you get the idea. This one's fun as a rental, but it's also short and quite forgettable other than the pretty graphics. - ***

Next in queue:

DOA 4 - let's see how much bouncy bounce the DOA girls have on the 360 Very Happy

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter - Really looking forward to this one. I always wondered why the gear in Ghost Recon was so much more advanced than the shit in Halo 2 - which supposedly takes place hundreds of years in the future. Confused

for 3 reasons.

1Halo2
2Halo2
3Halo2

My PS2 is only still around for GTA. Actually the past year Ive had it lent out to freinds. Most games are on all platformsand xbox wins that as its more powerful then the other 2. And the PS2 exclusive titles with the exception of GTA do little for me.
