"Pretty girls talking about sex and eating cake. Great stuff!"
4 stars

This Norwegian little gem is guaranteed to make you smile. A charming comedy about losing your virginity, this is stylish and cool with plenty of hot Norwegian high school girls.

Bea is sixteen years and nine months, and the last person on the planet who hasn?t had sex yet. At least that?s what it feels like to her. All of her friends have done ?it? and Bea is desperate to join the club. Enter Daniel ? not only the hottest and most popular guy in school, but he also has a crush on Bea. For her, it?s the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone (that?s a horrible saying by the way. Who came up with that?). She can lose her virginity and get to hang out with the cool crowd. Only problem is, what if she is crap in bed? Then surely Daniel won?t be interested anymore? Luckily, her friends come up with a genius idea. Why not seduce and use the nineteen-year old, dorky but relatively cute janitor boy Anders for a ?test screw? to make Bea ready to impress Daniel. All goes to plan. Well, almost. Unfortunately, Anders is a really nice guy and suddenly Bea finds herself torn between being with the school?s most popular guy or with someone she really likes. It?s a tough choice. With the result of a scholarship application on its way from Canada and with her friends in no mood to give up their newfound cool status, it?s not easy being Bea.

Sound cheesy? Of course it is, but fortunately not in an annoying way. The characters are all well-rounded; it?s all very tongue-in-cheek and actually really cool. All the young actors put in great performances, to make this a hugely entertaining film. Shot in bright colours with an energetic soundtrack, this is a great summer film, with a subject everyone, male or female, can relate to.

More honest than most coming-of-age films, in the middle of all the hilarity, Just Bea is really quite moving. It?s about how important your social status is in high school, but how a powerful feeling like love make these things seem trivial. What?s great about the film is that it doesn?t judge. Everyone makes mistakes and as long as you?re willing to own up to them, that?s perfectly ok. It?s a nice change seeing teenagers played by actual teenagers, talking and behaving the way teenagers do. Like most people their age, Bea and her friends are obsessed with sex and they do nothing to hide this fact. They practise the positions of The Kamasutra with each other in the library and talk about vomiting during drunken sexual encounters.

Just Bea is great fun, with good performances throughout from this young cast. With lots of pretty girls talking about sex for ninety minutes, how could this possibly have been bad?
