"GnarlyÖ.skate or die, man!"
4 stars

This is just great. What else can I say? Christian Slater on a skateboard, chasing Vietnamese arms dealers. Oh yeah! A classic film, full of all the things that made the 80ís so great. Bad hair, terrible clothes and loads of cheesy catchphrases, Gleaming The Cube has it all. Essential viewing for all fans of skateboarding and/or the 80ís. They just donít make films like this anymore.

Through some coincidental experience in an internet chat room, I found myself in the local HMV buying this film, perhaps in a desperate attempt to relive my childhood. Thereís always this problem when you watch films you loved as a kid. What if you hate it? Then all those nice experiences of watching it would be ruined. Luckily, this was not the case with Gleaming The Cube. Thirteen years ago I probably didnít realise how bad it really was, but now I could fully appreciate it. Itís a terrible film, but still manages to be hugely entertaining, which is not an easy thing to do.

The story is amazing. Christian Slater plays Brian Kelly, a young skateboarding punk, who has a serious problem with authority, be it his own parents or the local cops. Instead, his adopted Vietnamese brother Vinh is his parentsí pride and the one that looks set to follow in their fatherís footsteps and become a business man. Brian doesnít care though, as long as he gets to skate and listen to punk music. But, one day after discovering some dark secrets about his boss at the video store where he works, Vinh is killed. While everyone else thinks he committed suicide, Brian makes it his mission to prove his brother was killed. Armed with only his skateboard and his attitude problem, he sets out to find his brotherís killers. But, in order to get taken seriously he soon discovers he has to drop his punk attitude and looks, and become one of the ďnormalĒ kids. Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

Art Chudabala is awful as Vinh, but Iím not quite sure if it is bad acting, bad writing or just a mix of both. His timing is terrible and he is so uncomfortable being in front of the camera that itís absolutely hilarious. Christian Slater is good as Brian, the anti-authoritarian kid, something we already knew he could do from other teen classics like Pump Up The Volume and Heathers. It's nice to see that they put some effort into the skateboarding scenes, as they are actually really good, with legendary skateboarders like Tony Hawk and Tommy Guerrero turning in good performances.

Skateboarding fan or not, it doesnít matter. This film is great. Itís not every day you get the chance to see a car chase involving a Pizza Hut truck full of skateboarders and a police car stolen by Vietnamese arms dealers. Skate or die indeed.
