"Parents, beware! These are the games your children play."
4 stars

SCREENED AT THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2005: Drinking, vomiting, fighting, playing violent videogames, skateboarding and rape, all done by young teenagers. No, it’s not a transcript of a Larry Clark wet-dream. This is the latest in the current trend of Swedish films dealing with modern teenage life. Of course it’s been done before, and done better, but this is still a well-made little film about the problems of growing up.

Emma is a 14-year old girl in a small town in Sweden. She and her friends passes the time drinking themselves unconscious at various parties, making out with equally drunken boys and generally just being teenagers. At one party Emma passes out and is raped by one of her older brother’s best friends. For fear of disappointing her parents and friends she decides to keep it a secret. Trying to escape her new label as a whore, she tries to find another crowd to hang out with, eventually striking up a friendship with a skater kid.

Directed by a team of four directors, you’d expect the film to be quite chaotic. Instead it’s a very confident and honest portrayal of young teenage life in Sweden. The party scenes are very realistic and if you’re a parent, you’ll be shocked to know that this is quite probably what your children get up to at night. This is one of the central themes of the film, how little parents know about their kids. Emma and her older brother spend much of their free time getting drunk, but in their parents’ eyes they’re still their little angels.

Bringing back memories of Larry Clark’s Kids, this film shares the same themes of love, fear, violence and drugs. But at the centre of Fourteen Sucks there is a strong feeling of hope for everyone, something which Larry Clark’s film lacks.

The young actors all do a great job, but unfortunately the English subtitles do not do the script or their performances justice. Making it out to be much cheesier and cleaner than it actually is, much of the translated dialogue comes off as lame and uninspired. This is a shame, since the Swedish script is really quite funny. It’s hard for slang to successfully cross national borders, but this seems too much like it was done in a rush.
However, this is really a minor complaint, since the film works very well anyway. It’s a fine companion piece to other recent Swedish films about teenage love and problems, such as Lukas Moodysson’s Show Me Love.

With great performances and a good soundtrack, I can think of much worse ways to spend an afternoon. Of course the rape of a 14-year old girl is not the happiest basis for a film, but the directing team manages to deal with this difficult issue in a confident way.

A funny and well-executed teen movie, it manages to steer clear of clichés and stereotypes. This feels real and unfortunately it probably happens far too often.
