"Fans rejoice, everyone else shrugs"
3 stars

I have an admission to make - in the dark days of my misspent youth, comics were as important to me as Kerouac's On the Road is today. While my highest praise was reserved for the British collection 2000 A.D. (its pages were infused with the nihilistic British worldview, resulting in a number of involving and unpredictable stories), the American superhero releases also have a special place in my heart.

Sometimes I revisit my collection, but while 2000 A.D. still seems as fresh and exciting today as it did fourteen years ago, the passage of time has not been kind to the majority of the Marvel releases. The sole exception is The Uncanny X-Men, a series which, despite the limitations imposed by the Comic Book Code, packed its pages with gritty storylines, interpersonal conflict and bone-crunching action. While Captain America was busy spouting jingoistic homilies, our favourite mutants were fighting for their lives (and occasionally losing them) amidst an atmosphere of distrust and persecution, often despised by the very people they were trying to save. It wasn't Dostoevsky, but within the genre the series stood head and shoulders above its immediate competition.

Over the years there were three series' I hoped would make the transition the silver screen - Judge Dredd, X-Men and Watchmen. As far as I know there are no plans to film the latter, but Judge Dredd provided an object lesson in the perils of comic book adaptations. Put simply, what works on the page may not work on the screen. Putting aside the casting of Stallone in the lead role and the lacklustre script, Dredd suffered from the fact that it played out exactly like what it was - a comic book brought to life. The original stories are some of the finest you'll ever read, but, like books, imagination plays a significant role in your enjoyment. The reader fills in the voices, the gaps between the panels, and moreover an illustration will often look considerably more realistic than any attempt to recreate it in real life (tried wearing a Superman costume lately?)

So it was that I approached X-Men with some measure of trepidation. The thought of seeing my favourite characters on the big screen provoked no small measure of anticipation, but I also knew that the film had a very good chance of becoming nothing more than another effects-laden exercise in inanity. The result, as it turns out, falls somewhere in between.

One of the greatest problems facing the creators of comic book adaptations is how to set up the characters in the shortest possible time, since you can't assume that every viewer is a long-time fan. To their credit, the scriptwriters manage to set the scene in the first third of the film without causing undue confusion to viewers unacquainted with the premise.

For the uninitiated, X-Men takes place in the "not too-distant future", when mutant DNA has provided a select few individuals with extraordinary powers. Not surprisingly, the age-old human fear of the unknown ensures that these "mutants" must live apart from their fellow man. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), a wheelchair-bound telepath, founds a school for "gifted youngsters" (read: mutant scum), providing safe haven for his charges. The eldest students become the "X-Men" of the title, though their mission statement isn't entirely clear from the script. All of this is revealed by Xavier in a lengthy bout of exposition to his two most recent recruits, and while it breaks one of the cardinal rules of scriptwriting (being "show, not tell"), it sets the scene in record time.

Despite the subject matter, everyone involved with the film appears to be under the impression that they are participating in a rather serious affair. This sense is heightened by the presence of two fine actors - Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen - who are renowned for stately performances (they are, I might add, perfect for their roles). Elsewhere the acting is a mixed bag - Anna Paquin makes a serviceable Rogue, while James Marsden is strangely likeable as the priggish Cyclops (though the fact that you never see his eyes reduces his ability to express emotion). On the other side of the fence, Halle Berry (Storm) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) arouse little interest, though to be fair their characters are woefully underwritten.

Of course, what every fan wants to know is whether Hugh Jackman makes a convincing Wolverine. Despite my personal belief that Dougray Scott would have made the character his own, the good news is that Jackman is the highlight of the film. He takes what could have been an unsympathetic character and invests him with a pleasing humanity, while lightening the film with some welcome humour (he gets to deliver a couple of great one-liner's).

All up it's a reasonable ensemble, though the sheer number of major players ensures that the characters rarely rise above the two-dimensional. There's certainly nothing in the way of character development, which is a pity since the script could, if it so desired, have explored the emotional ramifications of an existence on the margins of society (I believe I've already mentioned that comics are not Dostoevsky, but that doesn't mean you can't allow a little angst to seep through the cracks).

I'm not sure why Singer was chosen to fill the director's chair, but he never seems entirely comfortable with this brand of entertainment. The film is short on atmosphere - it lacks the gothic appeal of Batman, or the tongue-in-cheek charm of Superman. Singer plays it straight, and while this avoids the potential pitfalls of developing a unique style it diminishes the film's impact.

To make matters worse, the narrative consists of extended bouts of relative inactivity (at times it's almost boring), punctuated by lacklustre action set-pieces. There is little in the way of jaw-dropping effects or blistering fight scenes, which is inexplicable given that this is exactly what the audience is paying to see. Part of the problem can be attributed to the small number of combatants (the film positively cries out for pitched battles involving at least a dozen participants), while the remainder is the fault of a script which devotes its limited time to a standard runaround. To be fair, the scriptwriters didn't have the time to craft an intricate, rousing storyline (whether they possessed the ability is another matter, though McQuarrie's certainly no slouch), but you get the feeling that the entire film exists purely to set up the sequel.

Strangely enough, I think it deserves one. With the extended introductions out of the way, a sequel could provide the strong storyline and high-octane thrills the franchise deserves (a showdown between the X-Men and a mutant-extermination squad? I'd pay to see that.) However, if it gets off the ground I would like to see a little more grit - I can only imagine that Singer was instructed to ensure X-Men earned a PG-13 rating, but this works against the subject matter. Apart from the odd impalement the action is rather sanitised, to the extent that it occasionally feels like a kid's film (which is not to say that I require non-stop graphic violence, but I would have loved to see what would have resulted if the script had been aimed at a mature audience). As for adult concepts (love, bitterness, human frailty) - well, it is to laugh.

The bottom line: X-Men is not a disappointment, but nor is it an unqualified success. A committed and likeable cast ensure it's a pleasant diversion, but garden-variety visuals, enervating action sequences and a pedestrian plot prevent it from becoming anything more. Fans of the comics will doubtless be prepared to forgive it these faults, but everyone else will be left to wonder what all the fuss was about.

If the name "Wolverine" conjures visions of a nature documentary, your time may be better spent elsewhere. If, however, it evokes a slight thrill, a memory of 36-page, four-colour wonders enjoyed in times long gone, then see it, take a trip down memory lane, and pray for a sequel which delivers on its promises.
