"Springer An Insult To Intelligence and the Movies"
Ringmaster (½*) - This movie sucked. It sucked big time. Do I need to go on? Actually I do a little bit to vent myself.Jerry Springer is the anti-Christ. I’ve been saying this for a while not because I’m a snob and I think the show is mindless and pathetic, but because of the attitude that he takes towards it. He himself calls it a freak show and stupid entertainment. It’s the same kind of bullshit that Sharon Stone continues to pull about her muff being shown in Basic Instinct. She always says that she didn’t know that they were going to film her “down there”. Believe me - being a film student and having studying the art and craft of making a movie - as far as lighting goes, they would have had a guy down there smoking a cigarette with that light meter to get the right reading on how to position the light so that her netherregions could be displayed for the whole moviegoing world to see. I don’t care that she did it. I certainly didn’t mind it. But don’t be such a bitch as to deny that you didn’t know. Besides - what’s the big deal - there’s another scene in the film where Douglas looks at her through a window and she’s standing there au natural in full light. Don’t look for my pity lady. But back to Springer. The mere fact that he’s even in this movie as the talk show host brings down the film’s level of credibility. If it’s going to be about his show - why not just do a documentary? Why write a script and try to make a comedy about his freak show if he’s going to be playing himself? A parody of talk shows with any kind of decent actor would have been much funnier. Not necessarily with this script - but you get my meaning. This film has absolutely nothing going for it. The half star is for the decent attempt that actress Molly Hagen puts into her role as the young white trash mommy. Everything else is pointless and ridiculous. Even the talk show scenes aren’t interesting or funny. One is better off just renting the “Too Hot for TV” uncensored Springer video. Save your money - I’ll give you the funniest line in the whole movie - “You big Wookiee looking motherfucker” - that’s a black guy saying it to his black girlfriend’s friend. That got a big laugh from me and the only laugh. Hearing Springer’s final thought about how poor people deserve to be humiliated as much as rich people made me want to vomit. That’s an argument for political correctness purposes and one that I’d argue only if white trash protested that they are being stereotyped. And people wonder where stereotypes come from? Watch the Springer show (or movie) and you’ll know why they exist. But back to Springer’s final thought.- after he vehemently gives it to a stock religious right character - he gets a big applause from his audience in the movie like it was the final scene in Rudy or something. There’s even an earlier scene where the producer of the show tells a TV reporter that he believe that she hates the show because she’s rich and she hates seeing that people like the Springer guests exist.Well guess what jagoff - I’m not rich - and I hate seeing that these people exist too. Can I get an Amen? I would much rather see Christopher Walken’s SNL character, Connie Stinson, the “fat hog” talk show host, be made into a movie. That 7-minute sketch had it right. This film doesn’t even care. Candidate for the worst film of the year.
