"Boring but watchable."
2 stars

While I was watching this movie, I kept thinking, “Please hurry up and get to the point.” In the end, though, I was glad I stuck with it. Still, I would never see it again.

WARNING - In order to review this film and discuss its meaning, I have to discuss certain aspects of the film you would not want to know before seeing it. Therefore . . . if you don't want to know this information, please don't read this until after you have seen the film.

You might think this movie is an exciting action movie, similar to a movie like “Dances with Wolves.” If this is your expectation, you will be sadly disappointed.
However, if you like romantic love stories, “New World” might be more to your liking. But, even as a love story, I believe it still disappoints because the story is just too slow. There are too many close up shots of Smith and Pocahontas that linger just that little bit too long, as if the director is trying to make a point.

The characters are well drawn, except for Smith. He comes across as a bit too silent. I think a man in his position would be more vocal. Smith did not get the girl in the end, but he is one of those characters who has a destiny that has to be fulfilled, and love can not stand in the way.

Pocahontas’ husband who takes her back to England is a sympathetic character, and I was happy to see him get the girl in the end.

Pocahontas was a very likeable character. The scenes where she prayed to her god were very moving, especially when one realizes that her way of life would soon be lost.

I liked the chief, his character seemed quite noble and dignified.

One thing that is outstanding about this film is the photography. The shots of the ships arriving in the virgin wilderness were breathtaking. Those men probably felt like we would feel if we landed on another inhabited planet.
The establishment of the colony came across very realistic. I think this was in part due to the set design. One could feel the hardship of living in those times. One point that was obvious was that the Native Americans were much better able to survive in the wilderness than the arriving settlers.

The scenes in England were very interesting, especially in contrast to the world we are immersed in during the first three-quarters of the film. The beautifully manicured garden showed the contrast very well. However, I would have liked to see more of a reaction from the Native Americans on seeing things they would not have seen in their own country. (Horses, carriages, etc.)

Even though I found this film boring, I could still watch it. I felt the cinematography saved the film. The film is not worth buying, but worth renting to have a look. One can always fast forward through the boring bits.
