"Whole lotta vehicular chasin' goin' on."
2 stars

There's a reason Don Siegel didn't direct this. I'm not sure what it was, since he's not around to ask and he probably wouldn't take my calls anyway, but I'd guess it's because "Magnum Force" is nothing more than a slack rehash of "Dirty Harry," the first, better film in the series.

"Dirty Harry" was an amazing film, on two levels. First of all, you got BEV--Badass Entertainment Value. Harry Callahan, police officer, vigilante, and all around bad muthafucka, was such a charismatic character that you didn't even need to look past the film's silliness; you just accepted it as part of the package.

It also succeeded as a gritty crime picture, ringing with authenticity. Siegel was a great action director--he made his film airy, and let the characters manuever, but he had the plot reigned in and kept it moving.

Ted Post does no such thing. He can work up some suspense for individual scenes, but he can't run it all through the film and tie everything together. What we have here is a picture with lots of violence, lots of chase scenes, a few dollops of fun, and no momentum whatsoever.

John Milius and Michael Cimino scripted this thing with the first film large in their mind, obviously; Harry stops at a hamburger stand, begins to eat his lunch, and is interrupted when he catches wind of a crime in progress--stop me when this starts to sound familiar.

They gave Callahan too many superfluous action scenes, inserted, I suppose, as exercises in badassery. All they really succeed in is wasting time--after the first hour runs around and you're still in the shallow end of the plot, you know you're in trouble.

Back to Ted Post. . . I hope he gave up the whole directing gig relatively quickly; he really doesn't have the hand for it. He lacks storytelling oomph, and can't decide what he's going for in terms of mood; you wind up with a group of disconnected scenes and a stillborn plot. Pathetic.

Finally, most importantly--the evolution of Harry Callahan as a character. Decidedly non existent. "Magnum Force" does nothing to expand the boundaries laid down by "Dirty Harry," instead trapping our hero in another lame plot and running him through the same paces. Shoot out, chase scene, shoot out, gratutious nudity, chase scene. . .

Bonuses: A couple of cool lines from Harry, Clint Eastwood doing his thing, and another jazzy, fruitily enjoyable score by Lalo Schifrin.

If you had a choice between a tight virgin with springy breasts or her slutty, saggy-tittied sister, which one would you choose? Watch "Dirty Harry" again and forget this one ever happened.
