Cannonball Run 2

"The biggest waste of talent in movie history."
1 stars

Clearly, Burt Reynolds had made some pact with the devil, and the devil came in the form of Dom DeLuise.

Burt Reynolds could have made ANY movie he wanted in the late 70's - early 80's. And he did. Without a doubt, Burt put out some of the worst films ever to be seen by human eyes. And this one takes the cake. The first "Cannonball Run" had some cute moments, and the novelty of having a movie based solely around car crashes still seemed cute. But when Burt and Dom Deluise started hanging out and making movies together, something went very, very wrong.

You know that there are some friends you have who can make you laugh harder than anyone else in the world, but when you try and explain what's funny about them to other people, you get absolute silence. That's what this movie is like. It's clear that Dom makes Burt laugh like nobody's business, but we just sit there, staring, trying to figure out if we missed something. All through the movie, they're laughing at each other, and the audience is thinking "These are the two most annoying people in the universe." It was probably the most fun they've ever had making a movie. But there's an old story that Zeppo was the funniest Marx Brother in real life. But onscreen, he was useless. Just like this movie.

It has an impressive supporting cast, with Jackie Chan, Daisy from "The Dukes of Hazzard", Ricardo Montalban, Dean Martin...but they're just sitting there, laughing. It's like joining a club where everybody knows each other, and everyone's already established inside jokes, and all they have to do is say something like "sock puppet" to make everyone laugh. Watching this movie made me feel awful left out.

Tony Danza and an orangutang. It shoulda been magic. It shoulda been magic...
