Craic, The

"Was The Craic a good time? Only just."
3 stars

I really wanted this film to work, to be hilarious throughout…but it fell short.

Fergus (Jimeoin) and Wesley (Alan McKee) flee to Australia in 1988 from the Troubles of Ireland only to find that Colin (Robert Morgan), an Irish thug, has followed them to settle a score. It’s biographical in parts, like when Fergus lands a spot on a cupid gameshow, The Meet Market, a parody of Jimeoin’s appearance on Perfect Match. World backpackers will relate to this yarn warmly, as the two larrikins battle their way around the country with stuff-all money. They meet chicks, they surf, and work on a fruit farm while running from immigration authorities.

The Craic, meaning a good time, is just that, but not a hilariously great time. There are plenty of laughs, with Jimeoinesque inquisitive humour. It’s an Aussie film with typical Aussie subtleties that American or even British audiences will find difficult to understand. Actually, Aussie audiences will get a kick out of “Bud” Tingwall’s ocker character as the fruit farm owner.

It’s a very laid back film, maybe even too laid back for my liking. I’d wait for this to come out on video.
