Kung Fu Panda

"Not Worth Fighting Over"
2 stars

It's a pretty lame cinematic endeavor that never gets creative on us.

With unimpressive animation and a creatively-bankrupt script, the animated feature Kung Fu Panda isn't painful to sit through, necessarily, but overall it's disappointingly bland and doesn't make much of an indelible impression. That extroverted, uncouth actor Jack Black provides the voice of the title character, a good-natured, overweight panda named Po whose life is very nondescript: joylessly waiting tables at his father's long-in-the-family noodle restaurant, he envisions something better for himself and daydreams of being a kung-fu master despite not possessing so much as an iota of fighting talent. One day, however, a window of an opportunity presents itself with auditions being held by the village's elderly master for the title of Dragon Warrior to take over for him, with the trainer being the gruff Shifu (voiced by Dustin Hoffman), figuratively the Yoda to Po's Jedi. By sheer accident, Po is chosen over more accomplished applicants who resent the panda's carefree, undisciplined approach to learning; and with a former evil disciple of the master's traveling to exact revenge over his longtime banishment, there's very little time for Po to transform himself into a brave fighter and take seriously the responsibility of the honor bestowed upon him. As is quite evident, the story line is derivative and predictable, the dramatic arc extremely limited, and the central message didactic with a capital D. The lazy moviemakers (one of whom did the live-action scenes of the not-bad The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie) haven't set out to make anything even remotely artistic or challenging, as is quite obvious, but even in areas that don't exactly require excellence, things are generally flat and uninvolving. It's second-rate hodgepodge with dippy dialogue and even dippier characters who come off as mere sketches that simply fail to register. Granted, some of the camerawork is interesting, which gives the images occasional degrees of depth and scope; even truer still, though, the central relationship between Po and Shifu lacks vital interest and engaging rapport; and the fight sequences, which should be the film's bread and butter, are lamely choreographed. Admittedly, Kung Fu Panda scores brownie points by neither stooping to juvenile potty humor nor incorporating a tired female love interest into the mix just for demographic's sake, but it's the quintessential Better Movies Past product lacking distinction and emitting a been-there/done-that aura that detrimentally envelops the thing from start to finish.

Skip it.
