"Another Great Thriller from Petersen"
4 stars

During these past 20 or so years, director Wolfgang Petersen has had his share of shit and shot. Ever since his masterful Das Boot, Petersen has wandered around the globe with pretty much good a handful of hits like The Never-ending Story, In the Line of Fire, Air Force One, and finally this film The Perfect Storm, seems to recall those days back in time when Das Boot was great. Sure, it’s an FX extravaganza and a summer flick, but at least it shined thanks to cool FX, great performances and superb thrills, despite a few screenwriting flaws.

So, in 1991, Captain William Tyne (George Clooney) who commands the sword-boat “Andrea Gail” gets a call after just barely arriving from his sword-fishing trip, that he and his crew have to leave again for another fishing trip. His crew consists of Bobby Shatford (Mark Wahlberg), David “Sully” Sullivan (William Fichtner), Dale “Murph” Murphy (John C. Reilly), Alfred Pierre (Allen Payne) and Mike “Bugsy” Moran (John Hawkes). Their loved ones don’t want them to go, but they go anyway. Tyne’s girlfriend Linda Greenlaw (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) also goes but on her boat, and towards another direction. As the Andrea Gail sails on and looks for it’s fish, a local news department Meteorologist (Christopher MacDonald) detects that a set of three storms are set to collide between each other along the East Coast of the United States, and explode into a storm never before seen on earth, and the problem is that the Andrea Gail and a few other ships are caught in the middle of it

The first praise must go definitely to the entire FX and sound department teams, which made the thrills and chills possible. Few films really ever catch the dangerousness of Mother Nature when she’s really at it’s worst. For that you must get the most realistic effects to make it work right. And here in this movie, I was totally blown off by it. The FX is the heart of the movie, with them the film gains its suspense and really blows you off due to its realism. The second praise, the actors. I was pretty much impressed as the “dynamic duo” of George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg went on to make such great performances in this film, they shined in the excellent Three Kings, and manage to improve here. Their performances also help the film to maintain a true atmosphere of the wits and guts of being fishermen.

The praise ends there. Now, though the characters have been well developed, the turning point in the movie seemed strange. Now this is no spoiler, after their ice machine breaks, they set of a daring return back to Gloucester, Massachusetts, which is their hometown, but not for fear, but for money. It seemed strange that a few people would risk their lives on a storm that could kill them just for the money. No ordinary person could do that. That I thought was a logical flaw, since they could just dump all the fish and get more later on. I only say that since that can only explain why the relatives of the fishermen were attempting to sue the filmmakers. An interesting thing that Petersen put to work here was that besides the main story about the crew of the Andrea Gail, he also took the film and submerged it into a variety of subplots, from a sail boat that’s caught in the eye of the storm to other ships in the area, to a rescue helicopter, and the Gail’s loved ones back home. Petersen manages to build the suspense in a classic style that when the big ones come, we are really holding on to our seats. A little problem I catched too was that the film takes a while to build up its suspense before we get submerged into the real shit. Don’t get me wrong, the transition that the film does in the beginning to develop the storyline and the characters was very well made, it just took a little longer than usual, especially in the parts back home, and the fishing trips few accidents.

As said before, the performances from the main cast were great, the remaining actors who portrayed the rest of the crew were also good. The rest of the supporting cast was good, though I didn’t like the way Diane Lane portrayed her character as the desperate Christina, who awaits for his lover Bobby, I think she overacted her part so that takes a little shine off her performance.

In the end, I’d recommend this film just for it’s sheer entertainment. The film has it all, triumph, tragedy, desperation, and a shitload of suspense and action. So grab a hold of your friend and some popcorn, or if you wish, just the popcorn and live and enjoy this thrilling recount of “The Storm of The Century.” (3.5-5)
