"Lame, but saved only by several key fart jokes."
3 stars

Written and directed by the creator of "Full House", which should send any discerning lover of comedy screaming from the video store. But it's got a mean streak in it, kinda, but nothing really BAD happens - it's like "War of the Roses" with Bob Saget and Brandy.

Seth (French Stewart) is a sitcom writer with his homey (Bill Bellamy, living up to his early promise shown in "How to be a Player"). Bill, who is married to supermodel Tyra Banks, sets Seth up with Chelsea (Bridgitte Wilson) who is good in bed. She wants to get married. He does not. She goes psycho. They play mean tricks on each other. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen learn the true meaning of friendship. All this, and Mayim Bialik and Urkel engage in a hilarious game of cribbage! OK, I made those last two parts up.

This is a sitcom, stretched to feature length. It has its moments, and some of them are quite funny (OK, so just the fart jokes are funny. I like fart jokes.) But it's paper-thin. The bottom line is that men are smart and hep and women are evil harpies who only want to get married and will stop at nothing to control the men and take away their money and the good things in their lives. Which, of course, is true, but still...We don't need to see it in cinematic form.

As mentioned, it's directed by "Full House" creator Jeff Franklin, and so you can predict all the jokes at least 5 minutes in advance. Sure, that's helpful. Thanks, Jeff! The performances vary; French Stewart doesn't exactly conjure up images of Cary Grant (or even Adam Sandler) as the romantic lead, but Bridgitte Wilson does a good job in a totally thankless and one-dimensional role. Tyra Banks is supermodel-riffic, and Bill Bellamy is only half as obnoxious he was in "Player", which means he's still REALLY obnoxious, but not to the point where I'm praying for his testicles to be eaten by a dog. And hey! Jason Bateman and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen are in it too, and that's nice to see that they're keeping busy.

My main problem with the film is that it doesn't really have a truly dark nature to it; all the attempts to fuck with each other are relatively harmless. It's trying to be a black comedy, but it's a dark comedy by the creator of "Full House", so when French Stewart throws his girlfriend's cat off a pier, we know that the kitty's gonna be alright. I could see Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky doing these things to each other if one of them forgot to polish Jesse's Elvis statue or something. It's the wacky kind of meanness - doesn't work.

So, all in all, you can rent it and you'll probably enjoy it, but afterwards, you'll think to yourself, "That was pretty stupid. I'm going to go eat a pizza pocket. My back itches".

The opening scene was filmed at Dave Coulier's house! God bless the DVD format and its director commentary! God bless the fact that this was a free rental.
