Nightcrawler

"X-Men’s tattooed blue, time-shifter seems normal next to this Nightcrawler"
4 stars

Like their mythical counterparts Stringers are creatures of the night who go in search of victims and get nourishment from their spilled blood. At least vampires have the decency to hide their messes rather than splay them across the evening news.

Riz Ahmed is delightfully awkward as the jumpy introverted "intern" and helps to offset Lou's bombastic style, and maintain tension as you keep wondering if something is going to go horribly wrong between them. Bill Paxton embodies measured sleaze as Lou's surrogate mentor; it's just too bad that he doesn't get more screen time. Renee Russo shines as the past-her-prime media hack who long ago traded principles for a paycheck and she enjoys some wonderfully creepy chemistry with Gyllenhaal. Even with such a talented ensemble cast, there is no doubting that this is The Lou Show.

In addition to losing 30 pounds to appear gaunt for the role, Gyllenhaal, literally left blood on the floor after suffering a nasty gash on his hand during filming. Lou’s staccato delivery of empowerment jargon, combined with unbridled passion, and laser focus would make Lou a dream employee, if not for the small detail that he is a complete sociopath. Add in Gyllenhall’s seeming ability to go almost the entire film without blinking and you’re talking an Oscar nomination at the very least.

Both a warped interpretation of the American success story and a cautionary tale, Nightcrawler is a stylishly shot, well written thriller that features one of the best performances of the year..
