Brain Dead (1990)

"A great late night time-killer."
2 stars

The kind of movie that you see on Sci-Fi at 2 am. Interesting enough to watch, but if you get up to make a sandwich, you probably won't feel lost upon your return.

After seeing Frailty and A Simple Plan, I did a search on some other Bill Paxton films and found this one. Paxton and Bill Pullman are in this flick, and the only guess I can have is that each had heard the other was in it so they signed on to their roles.

The first ten minutes or so include WAY too many shots of brains in glass jars accidently getting knocked oover and breaking on the floor in slow motion. From a shelf, in a dream, on the road...you name it, a brain splattered there.

What first felt like a bad B-movie eventually revealed glimpses of really cool ideas. The dialogue was pretty bad at times, but there were many ideas within that could have all themselves been films on their own. There's a bit of Gothika, some Fight Club, and probably a few more that all in Brain Dead unfortunately never really get to develop as plots, but only show up as brief twists.

Pullman plays a scientist who REALLY cares about his work, Dr. Rex Martin. Insert cliche money hungry corporate guy Jim Reston (Bill Paxton) and crazy former scientist Dr. Halsey (Bud Cort), and you have yourself a horror film.

After the initial 10 minutes of loose plot and brain-smashing, the next 75 minutes is a sometimes intruiging, sometimes confusing, and sometimes downright silly mix of morality, sanity, and greed versus humanity.

Had this been four or five movies with any one story line expanded and all cheesy dialogue removed, we probably could have had another M Night Shaylaman on our hands. Unfortunately, it wasn't and we don't.

If you're a die hard B-movie horror fan, you've probably already seen this one and have a $1.99 copy on your console. If not, there are probably better ways to spend 85 minutes of your time here on earth.
