Whatever It Takes

"Gratitude. Guh."
3 stars

My friend forced me into seeing this movie, but I actually didn't hate it all that much. I even came pretty close to liking it in parts.

Whatever It Takes does not have a complicated plot. It does not need one. The story is there for the gags; that's why it works. If this movie tried to sell itself as a serious romance, it would be unbearable. Luckily, it takes the safe route (much like the similarly underrated Can't Hardly Wait) and allows the audience to have some fun.

That's right, I said fun. At the movies.

Shane West plays Ryan. He lives next door to Maggie (the very lovely Marla Sokoloff). They are "platonic." Shane likes Ashley (Jodi Lynn O'Keefe). He has yet to reach the level of platonic with her. Ashley is good friends with Chris (James Franco), who likes Maggie. Maggie does not like Chris. Do you see where this is going, or should I continue?

Anyhow, we watch as the situation becomes increasingly complicated, and people start showing their "true colors." Then there are prom night hijinx and a happy ending. What makes this different from every other generic teen comedy made in the last two years, you ask? Not very much, aside from a lot of spirited performances and some genuine sweetness in the final scenes.

Shane West stands out the most, probably because he has the biggest role. He doesn't have that whole matinee-idol presence thing going on, but he's interesting. Marla Sokoloff is also good; she's cool, she's radiant, and in a few scenes you can see her nipples. I like that in an actress.

Jodi Lynn O'Keefe, on the other hand, is simply pathetic. She's not believable for a second. Franco does "snob" much better; he's smooth, yet hateful. Such range, such natural talent! The rest of the cast is enjoyable. Nothing to write home about, but I won't complain, either.

Director David Hubbard does an alright job bringing Mark Schwan's script to life; he doesn't exactly rank as an auteur (ha), but he's decent. He keeps things moving, there's always something to look at, and he doesn't distract. It's easiest to appreciate the job he does when you walk in expecting nothing.

"Whatever It Takes" is not the ultimate shit, nor will it win Oscars. But, like I said, it's fun. You'll laugh at the jokes, scoff at the plot, and enjoy the performances. If you don't feel like seeing it, then stay home and rent something foreign. You won't die if you miss it.
