"Fresh air never tasted so good"
4 stars

Back in the days when I devoured science-fiction novels by the barrow-load, I would occasionally turn my attentions to the bane of literary publicists the world over: the short story. Peddling short fiction is a bullet-train to bankruptcy, but the medium's limited commercial appeal is often its greatest strength, for removing the need to achieve a certain word-count, adhere to a traditional narrative structure, and devote countless pages to building the characters grants the author the freedom to experiment, resulting in some truly thought-provoking creations.

Philip Jose Farmer's Sketches Among the Ruins of My Mind is such an endeavour. It postulates a future in which the entire human race suffers from gradual amnesia: every morning you forget what you did the day before, and the following day you lose the memory of the day before that. It's a fascinating premise - imagine waking tomorrow morning, ready to walk down the aisle on your wedding day, only to find that you're ten years older, your wife died years ago, and the only insight into the decade just passed is provided by the notes and recordings you've left scattered around your apartment.

Memento is the celluloid equivalent of a short story: its structure repels any attempt to become truly involved in the characters, but the convoluted, gripping plot ensures you won't notice the loss. Destined to be the subject of dinner party conversations for months to come, it's a fresh, vibrant effort that washes away the bitter taste of every formulaic, creatively-bankrupt entry into the thriller genre that we've been forced to endure on the road from there to here.

Since the joy of discovery is one of the film's main attractions, I'll keep the plot details to a minimum. Guy Pearce is Leonard Shelby, a man who has lost his short-term memory after witnessing his wife's rape and murder. Every so often he forgets everything that has occurred since that fateful night, and is forced to use some rather ingenious methods of bringing himself up to speed on his quest to locate his wife's killer.

The hook is that the scriptwriters, John and Christopher Nolan, recreate Leonard's disability by telling the story backwards. The film is divided into a number of discrete sections, each revealing a little more of what has already occurred - we witness the results of Leonard's actions, but only later do the causes become apparent. In order to maintain some measure of suspense in the "outcome", there is a second narrative which moves forward in time, and the threads combine to create an atmosphere of suspense which is, at times, almost oppressive (and I should mention that while the script does share a similar theme with the above-mentioned Farmer story, it only uses the ideas which are effectively in the public domain).

Guy Pearce made his name in L.A. Confidential (and damn-near destroyed it in Ravenous), where he proved adept at playing a restrained, but generally agreeable, straight-laced prig. Leonard exercises similar self-control, but he is not particularly likeable - his obsessive quest and inability to grow through new experiences has gradually sanded his personality (not to mention his sanity) back to its bare bones.

Leonard does seem a little cold-blooded for a man who used to be an insurance investigator (though having known a few in my time, perhaps it's not too far from the truth), but this can be attributed to the fact that his disability keeps the memory of his wife's death burning brightly for the duration (how would you react if your most recent memory for the rest of your life was that of your wife's murder?) Pearce appears genuinely frayed, threatening to tip over the edge at the drop of a hat, but there are moments when the person Leonard once was shines through (a scene where he stokes a campfire with his wife's possessions is particularly moving). It would be going too far to call it a virtuoso performance, but Pearce's ability to capture Leonard's complex mindset goes a long way towards making this film the absorbing affair it turned out to be.

I am undecided whether Carrie-Anne Moss is a journeyman actress who occasionally sings above her range, or whether she's feeling her way along the path to greatness. Memento doesn't provide much evidence one way or the other, since her screen-time is relatively brief, and she's not called upon to display much in the way of genuine emotion. She certainly doesn't detract from the proceedings, but how much she adds to them is open to debate.

Joe Pantoliano, on the other hand, is just fine as "Teddy", the third and final lead. Looking as if he's just stepped off the set of A Better Way to Die, he provides welcome relief from Pearce's intensity, since he's a reasonably lively soul by comparison, and comes perilously close to providing the only likeable character in the entire film. His motives and intentions are not (initially at least) entirely clear, however, adding another layer of complexity to the proceedings, and Pantoliano possesses an edge (best evidenced by his performance as Cypher in The Matrix) which lends him a certain credibility as a smiling assassin. The film lifts a couple of notches whenever he's onscreen, and he deserves equal billing with Pearce in ensuring its success.

The plot is so tightly wound that it occasionally threatens to implode, but it hangs together surprisingly well. There's a few improbable occurrences - if Leonard really can't remember anything after his wife's death, we might be given to wonder how he's aware that he's even suffering from memory loss, since he seems to posses this information whenever he emerges from one of his episodes (he does have several memory-joggers, but he assimilates the information surprisingly quickly) - but it's nothing to get too concerned about, since such complaints are defused by the script's boundless ingenuity.

The film is, however, deliberately structured to provoke those dinner party debates I mentioned earlier, since it never provides enough information to draw a definite conclusion on the entire arc of events. This is not a reason to disparage the film (my well-known distaste for loose-ends notwithstanding), but I do wonder whether the scriptwriters' motives were entirely pure (which is to say that it was part of their original vision, as opposed to a calculated attempt to make their creation "the most talked-about film of the year").

In any event, the film's status as a shaggy-dog story doesn't unduly detract from its strengths. Memento weaves a dense and suffocating web, and when you read the words "gripping", "intense" and "intriguing" in the newspaper advertisements you can rest assured that they're nothing less than the truth. It's emotionally draining and requires an unusually-high level of concentration, but its rewards are many, and it'll have you pondering the subject matter long after the closing credits roll.

Forget about putting the brain on hold: it ain't easy going, but then the best things in life rarely are.
