"Stalked by a bear?"
4 stars

Mamet. Hopkins. Cool.

Directed by Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors and Mulholland Falls) with a script by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross), this movie is actually pretty good.

Anthony Hopkins is a bit of a bookworm. He know obscure facts about damn near everything. He's also got a trophy wife in Elle MacPherson, who may or may not be shagging Alec Baldwin. Baldwin and Hopkins get stranded in the wilderness following a plane crash, and Hopkins thinks Baldiwn's going to kill him to get the girl. They end up begrudgingly helping each other survive the elements (using Hopkins' accumulated knowledge) and a series of attacks by a bear who appears to be stalking them.

The setup is interesting, and the locales are exquisite. But it is the dialogue that Mamet has written and that Hopkins and Baldwin give life to that make it worthwhile. They banter, they curse, and it's all believeable (the talk, not the part about the bear). The characters evolve over the course of the film, with Hopkins becoming not so much of an introvert and not afraid to use his abilities to survive, regardless of how it may make him seem like an oddity in front of others.

The Edge, despite a shaky premise, is actually a decent flick, carried by the performances of the leads and the dialogue by Mamet.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
