Diabolique (1996)

"Blech."
1 stars

Blech.

Blech.

A remake of 1955's Les Diaboliques.

Why?

It's horrible. Sharon Stone seems content to walk around with a cigarette jutting out of her mouth or being held at some weird angle in one hand, and the clever plot twists of the original are discarded almost completely. I get the feeling that not only do the filmmakers not respect the movie they're redoing, but they don't respect the audience that loved that movie.

Director Jeremiah Chechik has done one really good movie (Benny & Joon), one decent film (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) and a couple of big time stinkers (this, Tall Tale, and a bomb known as The Avengers). If he continues to get work following this track record, you know something's seriously wrong in the movie business.

Blech.
