Great White Hype, The

"It's better than Major League, but what isn't?"

Doesn't satire need to be funny?

Director Ron Shelton is known for sports movies. He directed (and wrote) Bull Durham and Tin Cup, two of the better movies about baseball and golf, respectively. He also wrote and directed Cobb, an underrated movie if there ever was one, and White Men Can't Jump, the second movie to team Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as bad actors (the first was Wildcats with Goldie Hawn).

That said, Ron Shelton also wrote The Great White Hype.

If not for his previous credits, I'd recommend hunting Mr. Shelton down and causing him bodily harm.

The Great White Hype is uneven satire, barely offering a smile, much less laughs. It's played outlandishly, and that's a shame. The world of boxing is ripe for satire (it's a joke itself, really) and this movie could've been decent. As it is, you've got a champ who stops training and wears a prosthetic gut and a white guy who can't act with a glass jaw.

Sam Jackson's over the top in a bad Don King impression, Jeff Goldblum barely registers a pulse, Peter Berg is just plain awful (and not the least bit believable) and the bit players (Jon Lovitz and Cheech Marin, among others) don't even get a chance to shine.

It's not even worth a rental.
