Courage Under Fire

"Denzel and Damon. You can't really go wrong."
5 stars

It's good.

Director Ed Zwick made Glory, one of the greatest war movies ever made, about a regiment of black soldiers during the Civil War. Denzel Washington won an Oscar for his role in that film.

In Courage Under Fire, Zwick and Washington reteam to tell the story of Captain Karen Walden (Meg Ryan) killed in combat during the Gulf War. She's due to be posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor. Lt. Col. Nat Serling (Washington) is investigating her worthiness by speaking with her crew and reconstructing the events that led to her death. He, too, was in the Gulf War, and accidentally killed one of his own men with friendly fire. The story of his dealing with that mistake runs parallel to his investigation of Walden.

Serling is tortured, but he uncovers what really happened among Walden's crew, which includes a gunner with attitude (Lou Diamond Phillips in a bit of a comeback) and a medic who has a heroin problem (Matt Damon).

Courage Under Fire is completely engrossing, with a powerful story and standout performances from Washington, Ryan (going against type slightly) and a then unknown Damon.

It's well worth your time and money.

It's really good.
