Bowling for Columbine

"A Masterpiece of a Documentary!"
5 stars

When you simplify issue into a two-word soundbite like “gun control”, it may create the loudest bang on the political level, but it may as well have been shot through a silencer. Stop selling guns! Waiting periods! Keep them out of the hands of bad people and prosecute them all severely! Simple solutions that never seem to solve anything, no thanks to weapon lobbyists and politicians who would rather drop their big weapons than worry about the small ones. In the last film to affect me as much as Michael Moore’s new documentary, Bowling for Columbine, a character says “the how and who is just scenery for the public…it keeps them from asking the most important question…why?” Michael Moore asks “Why?” and many more questions in what is easily one of the best films of the year.

The opening bit sets the tone for the rest of the film when Moore walks into a bank that is offering a free gun when you open a new account. The by-play between him and the bank employees as he fills out his application probably couldn’t be written by the world’s greatest humorists and it concludes with what has to be the punchline of the year.

Thus begins Moore’s examination into the issue of guns in America, a land where two high school students in Colorado went to their Bowling class early in the morning before charging into Columbine high school and turning it into a nightmare that none of us will ever forget. But why did they do it? Moore may not have the specific reason behind that horrific massacre, but he’s desperate to uncover why this country has more gun-related deaths than any other.

Surely it’s because we have more gunowners and variety of weaponry than other nations. Not true. Turns out Canada has just as many gun nuts as the good ol’ USA, but their citizens have no problems leaving their homes unlocked at any time of the day. (A fact hilariously proven as Moore just walks into a number of Canadian’s homes.) If kids are shooting each other and have greater access to guns, then where are the parents and what kind of influence are they having? Ask the mother of a six-year boy that shot a little girl in his class; a woman bused on a welfare program 40 miles back and forth to work at Dick Clark’s theme restaurant. Better yet, ask Dick Clark as Moore does.

Moore’s confrontational camera-in-your-face approach isn’t as dominant as it has been in his previous documentaries Roger and Me and The Big One or his television show TV Nation, but when it is you’re glad. Mostly though, Moore lets the facts speak for themselves, stirring our emotions with breathless montages of gun deaths, our history of supplying weapons to foreign entities and their consequences and a harrowing account of the Columbine tragedy, complete with footage from the security cameras.

But where there’s tragedy, humor must emerge and Bowling for Columbine is one of the funniest films you will ever see. All the more extraordinary considering how Moore gets us to laugh in-between some of the saddest and most infuriating sequences. One of them is an animated short called The History of America (created by South Park’s Trey Parker & Matt Stone, also natives of Colorado) which traces why weapons were invented back in the Pilgrim days and how these milky white sailors and their ancestors held in fear anything that wasn’t their same shade and found new ways to embrace the gun. It’s impossible not to hold your stomach in laughter during this bit; a piece so dead-on perfect that they should let it stand alone at the Oscars qualifying it for Best Animated Short Film.

Our history reflects that we’re a violent culture, but does Senator Joseph Liebermann (who will always look like Star Wars’ Emperor Palpatine) convince us that violent movies and video games are to blame? Rocker Marilyn Manson took a lot of heat after Columbine since the killers listened to his music. Moore interviews him and the fact that even many critics bring up how well-spoken and insightful Manson is with his answers justs goes to show how the media can manipulate us into painting a one-sided picture. I’ve never been a fan of Manson’s music, but I’ve never seen him in conversation talk with anything but conviction and intellect.

Moore does set his sights on the media, but not the movies and entertainment products that are just as, if not more, prevalant in other countries, but on the news industry. (Just this week I heard on the radio about “the one-year anniversary of the Anthrax scares
.”) Scares, exactly. Shark attacks, poison and “young black males.” Remember the killer bees that were going to kill us all? Just listen to the report about the difference between the “kinder, gentler European” bees and the “Africanized” ones that you can tell apart by their “bigger body parts.” In the wake of the first anniversary of 9/11, Americans are still coming to terms with it, but it didn’t stop us from being inundated with reminders of the explosions and the collapse. You tell me, after seeing the week’s worth of coverage during that apocalyptic week in 2001, how many Americans felt safer with a gun?

Moore’s only fault in the movie is allowing that which he is attacking to infect him as well. If one of his arguments that the media sets its lenses on the faces of tragedy, then why not motion to turn the camera off when a school administrator breaks down on his shoulder? Moore even falls victim to the “William Hurt shot.” His climactic interview ends with a heartbreaking image; an exclamation point on the whole proceedings. Just before, he hedges his bet with an extra, unneeded shot, one that’s hardly spontaneous with a single camera setup. The moment is just as powerful without this shot, if not more.

Michael Moore treats the issues in Bowling for Columbine like a great mystery. Feeling less like a documentary than a chapter in a great detective series, Moore lets everything unfold on top of each other. Topics that are played for laughs turn out to have an even greater significance into the overall truth than at first glance. Individual sequences are examined and retraced adding another piece to the puzzle of this great enigma all leading up to a final confrontation, that not unlike Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein, may not be the only villain, but certainly gives us a face to pin that label on. Bowling for Columbine is a masterpiece of journalism, filmmaking and storytelling. Michael Moore has created a dark and twisted piece of Americana that deserves to be seen in every home and every school for years to come. Strike that – it needs to be seen.
