Star Trek: Nemesis

"A test of fate"
3 stars

The Star Trek machine again churns out another film. This time itís Nemesis with Picard facing the enemy within. Itís only a so-so effort, and doesnít bode well for the future of the franchise.

Letís face facts.

On the big and small screen Star Trek has had an extraordinary run. With five TV series and ten features, theyíve produced around 250-300 hours (at a guess) of story telling. Thatís a hell of a lot. Apart from your day-time soaps (which hardly count), nothing comes close to that.

All this story telling brings up two issues: The rehashing of old narratives and the talk of when is the Goddamn thing going to be taken out of its misery and put to rest.

In its latest TV incarnation, Enterprise so far (at time of writing weíve seen 13 episodes of the second season) seems to be trotting along adequately if not spectacularly, yet there seems very little new going on, and some storylines have definitely been seen before. Yet itís ratings are sound and it looks like it will survive for now.

The same can not be said for the films. Following the excellent First Contact, there was the flat Insurrection. There needed to be a killer film to reinvigorate the franchise and insure its future. We donít get that with Nemesis.

After celebrating the wedding of Troi (Sirtis) and Riker (Frakes), Picard (Stewart) and his Enterprise crew are ordered to the Romulan Neutral Zone. Thereís political uncertainty brewing on Romulus, but word is that they want peace with the Federation with the new Romulon leader, or Praetor, Shinzon (Hardy) wanting to deal directly with Captain Picard.

The film ambles along at a shuffling pace with far too many flat moments that just look like time fillers (the worst being the dune buggy scene). Whilst some dialogue, the design and acting are good without being special, the direction of the film just doesnít allow the film to get into full stride.

Tom Hardy as Shinzon is quite good actually. He keeps things restrained just enough so as he doesnít leave things overblown. Patrick Stewart is his usual dependable self. Whether you think he grossly overacts will determine whether being his usual self is a good thing or not.

The opening wedding scenes are quite painful. Trek has never done relationships particularly well - especially when Jonathon Frakes is involved.

Once the film settles down it becomes quite dark. Even darker than First Contact, but not of the same standard. The Romulan Senate scene sets the tone and it continues through out the film. Some scenes featuring Sirtis in distress are particularly forceful, but hopelessly out of place in context with the rest of the film.

With Lord of the Rings and Attack of the Clones setting the standard of meticulously detailed CGI and design, the design in Nemesis looks less than comprehensive. The externals of the Romulan Senate and the Enterprise look positively Atari, although Shizonís Warbird and the starship headbutt scene are rather cool.

As far as this being the end of this cast making movies, well the signs are beginning to show within the story itself that the crew is splitting up. Surely theyíll squeeze another episode or two. Remember that Spock died and went on to appear in a few more movies so we probably havenít seen the last of them just yet.

Fans of Wrath of Khan will be have alarm bells ringing havenít-we-seen-this-before? Casual viewers will not care about that, but franchise fans are the ones that stand to be the most disappointed with major thematic revisiting going on.

It all adds up to just an average film. If this be the end of this version of the franchise then theyíve gone out with a whimper. To continue the franchise Trek will need to lift its game. Despite some excellent moments, Star Trek - Nemesis ultimately disappoints.
