"How I wish there was more stuff blowing up here."
1 stars

Blech.

This movie tries to be sort of like the Posiedon Adventure.

It's not.

There's no Gene Hackman leading people to safety, there's no Shelley Winters blubbering at the drop of a hat.

No, we've got Sylvester Stallone as a renegade rescue guy who goes into a collapsed Holland Tunnel (an actual tunnel, not a tunnel in Holland) to save people who are trapped after a freak accident causes a cave in, and we've got Amy Brenneman with a really blank look on her face.

Stallone's the only man who can get the job done, despite the fact that he was disgraced when the last job he did went horribly awry and people (including members of his own team) died. The people he has to save are the usual band of characters: one jackass who thinks he's the one in charge, a dysfunctional family or two, prisoners who aren't so bad after all, a guard, and a dog.

Stallone wants to rescue, but the city folks want it shut down and blown up, so there's no survivors. After all, survivors would be a public relations nightmare, right?

Whatever.

Some suspenseful moments, but not enough. A lot of obvious tipping off (rats escape, so the people follow the rats), and it's got the seen-it-too-many-times fast-approaching fireball that should, by rights, burn everyone to crisp and take away the last bit of oxygen.

Alas, it doesn't.

And the moviegoer, along with the characters, has to suffer.

Director Rob Cohen has made an action movie that tries to be serious, a look at human spirit triumphing over adversity. He forgot the action.

Seen it before, and seen it done better.
