"Better than it has any right to be."
4 stars

To fans of the undead sub-genre and post-apocalyptic fiction, "28 Days Later," directed by Danny Boyle ("Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting") and written by first time screenwriter/occasional novelist Alex Garland ("The Beach," "The Tesseract"), is likely to feel familiar (because it is or because it should be). Derivative, unoriginal are both words that aptly, if superficially, describe "28 Days Later." Other words, and phrases like exhilarating, unsettling, disturbing, and tightly paced are equally applicable. As post-apocalyptic/survivalist horror, however, "28 Days Later" succeeds in depicting a credible, recognizable (and, therefore, more terrifying) universe guided by self-preservation (and Social Darwinism) and the greatest threat, our innate tendency toward homicidal violence.

After a brief, table-setting prologue that follows a disastrous break-in at a primate research facility (the chimpanzees are infected with bio-engineered virus which releases homicidal tendencies in the infected subjects), the action fasts forward 28 days later (hence the title). The apocalypse, at least in England, has come and gone. Jim (Cillian Murphy), a bike messenger, awakens naked but still connected to a heart monitor and an IV in an abandoned hospital. Jim, it seems, has literally slept through the end of the world (he’s been in a coma, the result of a collision between his bike and a speeding car).

Disoriented, Jim wanders into a deserted, desolated London, unaware of the blood-borne infection that has mercilessly spread throughout England (and possibly Europe). Finding himself in a church littered with corpses in the pews, Jim calls out a decidedly unhelpful “Hello.” Before long, an infected, red-eyed, malevolent priest scampers up the stairs. Distraught, Jim escapes, but luckily finds himself in the company of two other survivors, Mark (Noah Huntley) and Selena (Naomie Harris). Mark and Selena helpfully fill in the blanks for a still-disoriented Jim. Jim’s first thoughts, of course, are of his family. Selena objects, arguing for minimal risk-taking and self-preservation. Still, the trio presses on, with semi-disastrous results (which violently separates Mark from Selena and Jim).

Jim and Selena continue alone, traveling by day (and never alone), following two rules laid out earlier in the film. In short order, they encounter two other survivors, Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and his teenage daughter, Hannah (Megan Burns), who’ve barricaded themselves in the top floor of an apartment building. In one of the lighter moments (rare in a film where humor is a limited commodity), Frank shows Jim to his rooftop, a rooftop covered with multi-colored pails, all meant to collect rainwater and condensation (Frank admits to partial failure where the condensation is concerned).

Frank offers them a shred of hope, a radio broadcast promising sanctuary (and, oddly, “salvation”) with a military outpost outside of London. Avoiding the infected along the way (including a harrowing encounter inside a darkened tunnel) the survivors push through to their goal, but not without suffering loss. The military, headed by an emotionally unstable officer with a minor messianic complex, Major Henry West (Christopher Eccleston) promise sanctuary, but deliver something else entirely (he’s made a different set of promises to his men). That something, of course, involves bloodshed, as conflict runs through and with the military and the infected roaming the countryside.

As the hero/protagonist, former bike messenger Jim is expected (by the filmmakers and the audience) to play a pivotal part in the film’s culminating events. He does, but only through a credibility-stretching change in behavior and newfound skills in guerilla warfare. Yes, the audience is expected to accept that Jim’s real-life, pre-apocalypse experiences have prepared him to confront and help defeat a group of well-armed (and trained) men. Jim’s warrior behavior is most likely meant to push home Boyle and Garland’s views on human nature (and the innate tendency toward homicidal violence). They tip their hand in the penultimate scene, as Jim’s rampaging behavior momentarily confuses another character. She simply can’t tell whether Jim is acting “naturally” or has been infected by the virus.

There’s at least one (possibly two, depending on your perspective) problem(s) with 28 Days Later. First, in shifting direction from a four-person survivalist tale to a larger storyline involving another dozen characters late in the film, Boyle and Garland are forced to rush through character introductions (third-tier characters aren’t given even that much) and, due to the running time, also rush through character conflicts, both within the military and between the military and the civilian survivors. The need to keep the storyline moving at a predetermined pace means that characters, plot points, and character development are all underwritten. Interestingly, Boyle and Garland envisioned a completely different third act, one in which the narrative remained completely focused on the four characters and their plight (the DVD presents this alternative via commentary and storyboards). Genre fans, however, may immediately sense another, unrelated problem: the overly familiar storyline and plot points.

As Garland candidly admits in the introduction to the published screenplay, 28 Days Later draws on a whole host of influences from both genre fiction and film, beginning with George A. Romero’s “Dead” trilogy (e.g., Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead). From Night of the Living Dead, Garland borrows the ravenous undead. Although the zombies here are not, technically speaking, zombies, since they don’t die, aren’t resurrected, and don’t feed on the living, the overarching principle is the same: humans devolved into unthinking, violent automatons. From Dawn of the Dead, Garland borrows an idyllic moment inside a supermarket (the characters go on a shopping spree), as well as a confrontation at a service station with undead children (singular in 28 Days Later). From Day of the Dead, Garland borrows the military vs. civilian conflict (he also borrows the domesticated zombie idea). Other influences include Richard Matheson’s post-apocalyptic/plague novel, I Am Legend (filmed twice, first as Last Man on Earth in 1964 and The Omega Man in 1971), while also borrowing plot points and imagery from two British science-fiction novels-turned-films, The Day of the Triffids (the opening sequence with Jim awakening to an abandoned London will be familiar to anyone who’s read John Wyndham’s novel or seen the 1963 film adaptation) and Clockwork Orange (in the prologue, a chimpanzee is force-fed violent imagery).

Still, in a film where the genre influences are relatively easy to spot, "28 Days Later’s" visceral and emotional impact is difficult to ignore (an obvious credit to Boyle and Garland, who manage to create undeniably vivid characters to match a vivid universe). One scene, in its surprising tenderness (especially in a film with so much bloodletting, most of it brutal and quick), stands out. Jim, in mid-nightmare, believes himself abandoned by his new friends and fellow survivors. Frank, upon hearing Jim’s mumblings, offers him a reassuring word. Jim’s response, “Thanks Dad,” effectively conveys another, countervailing tendency (to our violent one), the need for family and interpersonal connection (something Jim seems to know innately, but which Selena needs to relearn).
