"They should have paid ME 7 bucks to sit through it."
Now I know why nobody has heard from Mallick in 20 years...This will be the blockbuster disappointment of the winter. What the hell was the studio thinking when the director brought in his cut? Oh yeah, great movie. Sure.
There are two things essential to a film. A plot, and characters. Characters can't exist without a plot.
Basically, these guys are at war. They're trying to take a ridge at Guadal Canal. Jack Witt, one of the soldiers, leads us through the war in a smarmy, poetic, boring series of voiceovers - not to mention flashbacks of the love he left behind. Problem is, nobody cares.
This movie should have been 90 minutes not over 180. It's a dull, long, overly symbolic film.
Nolte delivered a fine performance, but he was the only person with any real motive. The rest were just "guys in the war". There was really no climax or denouement, just a series of symbols framed into the film supposedly to explain the story. If there was a story to explain.
Save the 8 bucks and wait for Ryan to come out on video for 4.Do not see this movie, repeat, do not see this movie. Over.
