Calendar Girls is a very likeable if not predictable film based on a true story about a group of middle age women whom posed nude for a calendar in the name of charity. It has its share of laughs and helped by some sympathetic performances, even if the script begins to run out of ideas. The story is simple as it is true: the Women’s International club has always had charity calendars full of food, which make for boring shit. But then two members, Chris (Helen Mirren) and Annie (Julie Walters) finally come up with an idea which will be great for charity and to raise money for the hospital where Annie’s husband died of cancer: Do a nude calendar.
HOLD ON TO YOUR HORNY DICKS, YOU FUCKERS! Simply do a nude calendar with the private parts being covered by objects or cupcakes and shit like that. The rest of the story is just your usual by-the-numbers predictability since you get your usual conservative opposition from inside (family) and outside (the WI itself), the sudden success, the cost of success over one’s family, and back.
Those expecting some real nudity might want to dig out their late-night porn from your closets, since there isn’t that much anyways (It’s PG-13 for Christ sake), with only a flash here or there (the best provided by Mirren whom never has had a problem of taking off her clothes), while the rest of the shots are carefully covered to prevent audiences from getting off since that isn’t the point of the movie at all.
The film’s message gets through all right, but it doesn’t rise any higher than your usual average against-all-odds-then-what-now fare, since there isn’t that much to work with, and while there are some funny and emotional moments, acting department provides most of the work to keep the film going. In the end, the film is pretty much your average passable renter, and you might as well get your hands on the original calendar if you want to. But despite the fact that there’s nothing new around here, the film also does make the point though, that women can still be hot, even after age 40. 3-5
