Welcome back to another week of new on home video release news. I hope you've all had a good week. We've got quite a bit to cover this week. While there are many titles due out for release, I'm sad to say that some of them leave much to be desired as far as our viewing pleasure goes. So lets get right into it and see what we can dig up for the coming week.
One of the most anticipated titles for people coming into my video store this week is Open Range. They've been asking about it for the last couple of months. But then again, we are in the Midwest, and folks here do like their westerns.
Starring Kevin Costner (Costner also directs), and Robert Duvall, Open Range finds two cowboys out on the free range, doing nothing more than trying to make a simple living by raising their cattle. Free Rangers, as our cowboys are known, have no home, but roam about the plains, just going where the cattle take them.
Trouble starts when one of the hired hands heads to town and doesn't come back. Charley Waite (Kevin Costner) and Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) leave the remaining hired hand back at the wagon and head out to look for him. Little do they know that the town into which they will venture has more than one person who hates free rangers with a passion.
I found the film to be pretty much OK. I can't say that I put it into the same category as Dances With Wolves, but it's been quite some time since Costner has done anything on that level. If you like the western genre, you'll like Open Range.
Other reviews from our staffers include:
An attempt at horror will also be hitting the home video market. Cabin Fever hits video shelves this week. For me, this film opened with a solid plot, however, it took a turn for the worse towards the middle of the film. For me, this film just got a little too silly and predictable. I had such high hopes, and they were dashed upon a burnt body floating in that river of life.
We find our young people getting away from it all in the opening of this film. They head out to the woods, for fun, sex and in general, good times. The cabin they end up staying at is more or less completely isolated from civilization.
Enter the woodsy avon lady with a knock upon the door. No! Wait! It's some guy, who looks like someone has either peeled or melted his skin off of his body. Screaming for help, he proceeds to infest their only means of transportation with a bloody fountain emanating from his mouth. During this encounter with Mr. LookatmeIamabloodylump, the guys in the group proceed to beat the hell out of the pickup, shoot it with a rifle and in general, trash it ensuring that they are totally screwed and have no way to get back to civilization.
The plot, story, movie in general, well for me, just goes downhill from this point on. Just be sure to avoid Dennis, he's a nasty little shit who really doesn't belong in this movie. He likes to gnaw on folks.
Several of our staffers disagree with me on this film. Click their names and get their personal opinions of Cabin Fever.
God forbid, but Marci X also makes it debut this week on home video. I tried to watch this film, I really did, but it was just too damn silly for me.
The plot outline? Ok, I'll try, but it's really hard to type when I think of this film. We have Lisa Kudrow who plays Marci (obviously) who is a spoiled Jewish American Princess (hey wait, I ain't makin this up, they actually called her that on the back of the box). She's forced to take over her fathers record label Felony Assault, due to a stress induced heart attack surrounding the controversy over the hip-hop song Shoot Ya' Teacha by Dr. Snatchcatcher(Damon Wayans). (Oh aren't they creative at the studio?)
Do I really need to go on? This film just ain't worth bothering with. I think it's so bad, that only one other staffer, Collin Souter reviewed it, and he agrees with me. This film sucks.
There is one other major title of note this week (uh, not that Marci X is really a title of note). Fans of the film Desperado have Once Upon A Time In Mexico to look forward to picking up On Tuesday.
This film is the sequel to the 1995 film Desperado and as our own Eric Snider points out in his review of this film, Desperado was actually a sequel to the 1992 film El Mariachi.
This film stars several well known names in the entertainment business. Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp, Salma Hayek, and Willem Dafoe all jump in for this low budget ($29,000,000) action adventure.
If you liked Desperado, you'll most likely enjoy Once Upon A Time In Mexico. For all of our staff reviews on this film, just click away on the names below.
