New On Home Video: Tuesday January 27, 2004 |
New on Home Video is updated every Monday Evening | by Randy Muselman
I'm in the Midwest, Missouri to be exact, and right now, it's snowing outside. That makes it perfect video weather. Who wants to get out in weather like this anyway. Call the pizza delivery guy! Grab your mouse and sit back, relax and find out what's hitting home video shelves this coming Tuesday January 27, 2004.
A Disney classic is re-visited on DVD this coming Tuesday. The 1951 classic Alice In Wonderland: Platinum Edition hits video store shelves and it's packed with tons of extra goodies that all the little ones are sure to enjoy. Now I don't mean to sound like a commercial, but, I really enjoy the old Disney classics and I think the features on this DVD are worth mentioning.
Some of the extras featured in this title are: Disc 1: Remastered and restored with an all-new transfer Virtual Wonderland Party activities including riddles, silly song & dance, Teapot orchestra, Mad Hatter Says, and other games and stories. "Thru the Mirror" animated short with Mickey Mouse. "I'm Odd" never before heard song. 2 Sing along songs. Set-top game.
Disc 2:
"One Hour in Wonderland" documentary (60 mins.) "An Alice Comedy: Alice's Wonderland" featurette (8 mins.) "Operation Wonderland" featurette (11 mins.) Excerpt from "The Fred Warring Show" (30 mins.) Deleted Material Featurettes: "From Wonderland to Never Land," "Song Demos," Deleted Storyboard Concept: Alice Daydreams in the Park" Original Walt Disney TV introductions and trailers Art galleries Plus a Wonderland match card game set
Titles that will get more notice than others I'm going to mention this week will include some really bad films, and well, some that aren't so bad, but not really great.
House Of The Dead hits home video this week, and it's got to be one of the worst attempts at a horror film I've seen in quite some time. This thing has no plot, no substance of any kind, but several boobies flying around. Not even that can save this sucker. When my better half can watch a supposed horror film, and just sit there and laugh, trust me, it sucks.
Other reviews from our staffers on House Of The Dead include: Eric Snider Scott Weinberg
Also on Tuesday, we get Cuba Gooding Jr. starring in Radio. I myself found this to be somewhat of a likeable film. It wasn't that great, but, if you want to kill a couple of hours in front of the TV, this film is worth a watch. Gooding plays a developmentally challenged young man whom a local football coach takes under his care and tutelage. The appeal of this film for me was the fact that it's based on a true story.
This is probably the largest title that folks will recognize this week, others mentioned below tend to be a bit on the discreet side.
Staffers tend to disagree with me on this title, read their complete reviews of Radio:

In the film Le Divorce, Isabel (Hudson) heads to Paris to help out her pregnant stepsister (Watts), and arrives to find that her husband (Poupaud) has abandoned her. Deciding not to cave to les ennuis, the sisters hit the Paris social scene, where they attend parties where natives and expatriates mingle. Cross-cultural romances and hijinx ensue.
From what I can see of this film, I'd have to agree with our staffs reviews of this title it sorta sucks.
Erik Childress Greg Muskewitz
There are a myriad of lesser known titles out this week, and of course, we get to re-visit films from the past which are being re-released for the first time on DVD.
Best Defense Capturing The Freidmans Civil Brand Comic Book: The Movie Daytime's Greatest Weddings (This is a compilation of soap weddings) Dear God Gang Of Roses Giant Monsters All Out Attack Godzilla VS Megaguirus (Yes, the link shows up as a Japanese title, it's a correct link) I'll Be There Justine (1969) One From The Heart(1982): Special Edition Pontiac Moon (1994) Scorched A Smile Like Yours Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country Thirteen Time Bandits (Divimax Special Edition) (this is a high-definition transfer)
Well, that about does it for a listing of the films that are hitting home video this week, but, what about you folks out there who collect television series? Well look no further! TV series hitting home video this week include:
The Critic: Complete Series Dilbert: Complete Series Friends: Season 6 GI Joe: Season 1 Part 1 The Lost World: Season 1 Mail Call: Season 2 (Hooo RAH!) MTV's Wuthering Heights (OK, it's a movie, but made for TV)
The top ten home video rentals nationwide this last week round out like this:
(Source: Billboard.com)
1. S.W.A.T. 2. The League Of Extraordinary Gentelmen (Widescreen) 3. Seabiscuit (Widescreen) 4. American Wedding 5. Freaky Friday 6. Jeepers Creepers 2 7. The Order 8. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 9. Bad Boys II 10. Alex & Emma
Now if you are looking for something a little different to watch this week, let me make a couple of suggestions for your home rental needs.
Whale Rider is just a darn good film period. It's unique in it's story, and that's what I think you'll like about it. Staffers agree with me, you won't want to miss this title. Also, I'd like to suggest a title called Devil's Pond. It's got a solid story line, and will keep you interested. These are a couple of the more obscure titles that should not go unnoticed. Check'em out, you'll be glad you did.
That about wraps it up for another week, I hope you find this column usefull in your home rental needs. As always, drop me a line with your comments, good or bad, we like to hear them all. I'll see you next week.
