Pick your favorite Actor(s) and tell me why

Here are my favorites Males

DeNiro He can handle everything. Loved Cape Fear,Angel Heart, SLeepers Jackie Brown,Casino,Analyze This...

John Travolta. He often chooses the wrong movies (Michael, Phenomenom...) but he still has the greatest charisma I have ever seen.
Loved him in "Pulp Fiction", "Grease", "Face of"f, "Broken Arrow","Swordfish"...
When John comes in the picture, everything else fades...

Kevin Bacon He rocks ! Loved him in: Hollow Man,Stir of Echoes,Wild Things, Sleepers, Flatliners, She's Having a Baby, Friday the 13th...

Michael Douglas Loved him in the game, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, The War Of The Roses. Most of his latest movies suck !

Kurt Russel ("Breakdown", "Unlawfull Entry", "The Thing"...)
Mark Wahlberg (he was the greatest in "Boogie Nights")
and Jeff Daniels (loved "Chasing Sleep") are also on top of my list.

And My Favorite Females

Jessica Lange
Again.. Charisma. I love her, specially when she playes a bitch.
We do not get to see her very often, I think its a shame.
Loved her in Cape Fear, Hush, King Kong...

Juliette Lewis
A girl with balls ! Loved: Strange Days, Natural Born Killers and oeps again Cape Fear (strange I did not realise before now that 3 of my favorite actors are in that flick)

Madeleine Stowe and Sharon Stone are also Top Ladies !

Travolta isn't an actor's nutsac. And Juliette Lewis doesn't have the balls (or she'd have turned down The Other Sister), her characters do.

Blokes:
Depp
Clooney
Sam Rockwell
Kevin Corrigan
Donal Logue
Jack Black (even though he keeps doing crap)
Cusack
Seth Green
Pitt (forget the looks, guy can act)

And I'll watch any film starring Matt LeBlanc just so I can laugh at how inept he is.

Chicks:
Portman (as long as she's not wearing a Lucas-designed wig)
Theron (she's hopeless, but I like to look)
Zeta Jones (respect, she can act even if she's affected as heck)
Mischa Barton

That'll do.

Blokes:

Pitt - Despite being pretty much top of the A-list he chooses some great roles
Depp - Ditto, and anyone who had to go through the doomed shoot of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has to be admired
Spacey - Might have gone downhill recently but he's top class (anyone seen his impression of Chris Walken "auditioning" for Star Wars? Funny stuff)
Hanks - Versatility. Nothing more.

Chicks:

Zooey Deschanel - The oddball factor. Small role in Almost Famous was great. There's something going on behind those eyes.
Amy Adams - Someone give her a bigger and better role, please. She's just got the innocence I think.
Mira Sorvino - Been nowhere lately but loved Mighty Aphrodite. Can act, just doesn't seem to get any roles of late.
Frances McDormand - Got great screen presence

There's plenty of others I like based on looks (read Theron, Tomei, Judd, et al) but that's a different question altogether. Smile

I sooooooo love Johnny Depp. He's a really good actor in everything he makes and is very easy on the eyes! Twisted Evil

Tom Cruise is a long time favorite.

Brad Pitt, well he's just plain hot and makes good movies too. Loved him in Oceans 11 and Legends of the Fall. That still makes me cry Embarassed

Antonio Banderas of course. He's so yummy and was great in The Mask Of Zorro. He should make a second one. I'd go see it Very Happy

I tend to love actors on the way up/on the cusp, or those who stay relatively unknown.

Clive Owen, Gael Garcia Bernal (go tash!,) Diego Luna, Adam Brody, Troy Garity, Cillian Murphy, Matthew MacFadyen, Mathiew Kassovitz, Vincent Cassel

Alex Kingston is criminally underrated. Shirley Henderson, Amy Sedaris

More popular fav's:
Guy Pearce, Benecio Del Toro, Holly Hunter, Frances McDormand, Emma Thompson, Sam Rockwell, Stanley Tucci, the Wilson bros, Audrey Tautou...

I'll second your picks, too, but I really love Adam Brody. I loved him on "Gilmore Girls" and he is the best thing about "The O.C." I have him on my TiVo wishlist and saw him in an old episode of "Judging Amy" playing a goth kid, which was kind of a different direction for him. I think he is so funny and pretty adorable, too.

Daniel Day-Lewis: Ever since I saw him on My Left Foot, it just clicked. Just love the way he acts, his dedication, and how he blends himself into his characters.

Ian McKellan: I don't care what the homophobes say, he is the best actor of the generation. He was SNUBBED for his work in Fellowship of the Ring and Gods & Monsters.

Bruce Campbell: The man played the ultimate cheesy superhero: ASH!

Steve Buscemi: Puts heart and sarcasm in his roles. Makes his characters chrismatic in their own way. Mr. Pink, I tell ya!

Al Pacino/Robert De Niro: No comment necessary.

Johnny Depp: Very diverse actor. The man is a freaking nut.

Jim Jarmusch's b/w Western Dead Man is my favorite Depp film that also contains his best performance.

O.k let me reform my answer:
I never saw a good movie that was good BECAUSE he was in it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street GREAT movie but not because of him
Platoon: nope
Edward Scissorhands: liked it, maybe this is the only one I really liked him in
Benny & Joon: hated it
What's Eating Gilbert Grape: Did not like it
Ed Wood: Have not seen it
Donnie Brasco: This one I liked but can not remember outstanding acting
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: VERY boring to me
Sleepy Hollow: Great visions and great filming but Dep was again "boring"
Blow: did not see this one
From Hell: It totaly disapointed me
Pirates of the Caribbean: did not see it yet

No, sorry, and lets not forget the very very boring movie The Astronauts wife...Fell asleep watching it and mind you, I was watching it with friends. I keep on using the same word, but I really find him "boring", lame.

Yikes. He's outstanding stuff in nearly everything he's in. Adittedly, The Astronuat's Wife and The Ninth Gate blew chunks, but at least he was doing something different, instead of retreading the same old same old.

Scissorhands? Fear and Loathing? Pirates? Those roles are the kind of way out there roles that other actors give big respect to.

If you compare his body of work to Geoffrey Rush, who always does the goofy oddball super-villain (poorly) and has an Oscar to show for it, it just doesn't seem right.

Oh yeah, someone mentioned Jake Gyllenhaal above - absolutely on my list. Along with his sister Maggie.
