Anyone else watch this last night? It was funny in parts, but the laugh track was SO over the top that it basically killed the comedy dead.

It was almost like they were doing a 'show within a show' where the idea was to demonstrate how awful TV sitcoms get ridiculously crazy laughter for no good reason.... except not.

It's on at the same time as The Amazing Race, stars the unfunny Cordry brother, has Seth MacFarlane involved, and you'd think the two previous times the pilot didn't take would have indicated that this wasn't a good idea (I think the first version was the thing I laughed at least among the "Other Network" presentations).

Hell, no.

I was watching for maybe 15 minutes, and then I turned to my wife and said "What the fuck are we watching this for? Its awful."

If the laugh track was supposed to be some kind of half-ass commentary on overproduced sitcoms that need crutches, then they forgot that some of the jokes actually do have to be funny once and awhile.

So it wasn't just me - the laugh track really was as bad as I thought?

That's a relief, because I thought maybe it was seeming so awful because, I dunno, maybe I was having a stroke.

I kept checking for the smell of burning toast.

Yeah, it was an overly artifical goof- they did it once with Stewie on Family Guy when Brian and Stewie were shooting material for Peter's Cable TV channel- every time a lame situational joke reached its punchline you got a loudly overdubbed fake, strained laugh from Stewie-

Evidently the height of comedy for "The Winner" is to repeat this original joke- which was very funny and worked exactly once- ad nauseum for the entirety of the episode- pretty much becoming exactly what it failed to lampoon.

I was just sitting there and time's passing, and I'm not laughing, and finally I'm just turning to my wife incredulous about how resoundingly unamusing and sad the whole thing was.

I find it very hard to believe just how much of a promotional kick-off this got from Fox when it is obviously so bad. I had heard a lot of buzz about just how funny it is but I, like others here, couldn't even sit through an entire episode.

The show did remind me a bit of "Get A Life" (also on Fox; back in 1990) staring another break-out comedic genius Chris Elliott, however this was a different time with different expectations.

"The Winner" falls flat while trying way too hard.
