Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Robert Flaxman

"Lucas' dark side still can't bring balance to the force."
3 stars

When plans for a trilogy of films that would cover the story leading up to the original Star Wars saga were announced, now more than a decade ago, fans were surely overjoyed. Here were some of the most popular films of all time, and now there were going to be more of them! And indeed, when the films came, so did the people, in droves. But eventually the excitement turned to grumbling. George Lucas, it was said, has ruined the series by introducing these films into it. Revenge of the Sith, the third and final episode in the prequel story, isn’t bad – but it isn’t the savior some were hoping for.

Only someone who spent the past thirty years in a cave could have no idea what Star Wars’ overall story is, so I won’t bother going over Sith’s plot more than a little. The basic outline is this: Anakin (Hayden Christensen) and Padmé (Natalie Portman) are secretly married, and she is now pregnant. A rebel droid leader is giving the Republic problems. Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) keeps increasing his emergency powers, and the Jedi are concerned. Both Palpatine and the Jedi want Anakin to help them work against the other. Eventually, Anakin turns to the Dark Side (the reason for this is one of the few surprises the movie can offer), and ends up becoming Darth Vader.

Considering how wooden the first two films were, Lucas manages to work the impossible into this film: some real emotion. The scenes between Anakin and Padmé still aren’t great (Lucas has been married – why doesn’t he seem to know anything about how lovers talk?), but, surprisingly, Christensen does pretty well the rest of the time. The dialogues between Anakin and Palpatine are among the film’s best, and Lucas and Christensen actually give Anakin some sympathy, something the character lacked in Attack of the Clones, before running him down the road to the Dark Side. (Christensen reportedly said that Tom Stoppard rewrote some of the dialogue, which perhaps explains its improvement.)

Although overall it is enjoyable and a significant improvement on its predecessors, there’s still something unsatisfying about Revenge of the Sith. With The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones there were obvious faults to point to in criticizing the films, but Sith plugs most of those holes. Still, there is something fundamental that it lacks, something that has been absent since Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon stepped onto the screen in Menace.

The problem with the prequel series as a whole is this: it doesn’t really have a hero. It aims to be a serialized tale of adventure just like the original trilogy, but how can it do that? Its characters aren’t action heroes but stoic Jedi and annoying Jedi ruled by their emotions. Anakin certainly isn’t a hero, even though he’s really the main character of the prequels; without him they wouldn’t exist, but by the same token they can’t do anything positive on that count because of who he must become. The same can be said of Obi-Wan; anything “heroic” he does is on a pretty small scale, since ultimately he must fail for the original trilogy to exist.

Lucas’ calculated desire to link the series wherever possible is also something of a problem. Yes, fans would complain if there were loose ends, but the prequels have presented plenty of things that seem out of place on the heels of the original trilogy, such as the infamous midichlorians. Even Sith, easily the best prequel on every count, feels forced at times, as though Lucas had a checklist of plot points (and recycled dialogue) to get out of the way and just stuck them wherever. In particular, the film’s conclusion is a virtual parade of loose ends getting tied up in as short a time as possible.

Maybe this isn’t all Lucas’ fault (at least, not in the way we’ve been inclined to think). In some ways, the prequels were destined to fail – maybe not as spectacularly as they have (not financially, but artistically, in the eyes of many fans), but to do so nonetheless. By way of comparison, think about how infrequently a book-to-film translation is enjoyed by fans of the book. It’s very difficult to see a film when you know more or less how it has to turn out, especially when the unfolding of the film’s plot then fails to meet your expectations. (When films avoid this problem it’s usually because they bear almost no resemblance to their source material, Jurassic Park being the archetypal example of this phenomenon.)

The prequels, then, fail because they can’t surprise. In the absence of significant drama, the films become a parade of plot points. Sure, we don’t know exactly how Anakin turns to the Dark Side – but because we know that he does, somehow the entire process carries less importance. (To Lucas’ credit, he probably could not have handled this arc any better within Sith.) Imagine going to see Star Wars for the very first time in 1977 and already knowing that there would be sequels and that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. Would it make the movie play a little differently for you?

Star Wars probably would have escaped relatively unscathed, however, because of the other thing the original films had that the prequels do not: charm. Everything about the prequel trilogy feels calculated, cold, almost inhuman. If it came out tomorrow that George Lucas had actually used an experimental robot he built to write the dialogue for the films, how long would anyone be shocked before nodding and thinking to themselves, “Well, that explains a lot?” The original trilogy isn’t Shakespeare, but its dialogue had warmth and wit, two things that the prequels lack almost to a line. “Wit” is a thing of the past for Lucas; Obi-Wan gets a few quips here and there, but he’s no Han Solo.

Sith is better on most of these counts than the other two films, but in the end it succumbs just enough. Despite the emotion that finally comes to the surface, the film only manages to be moving for a brief moment at its conclusion; the action sequences are good but never truly rousing. Again, this must come down to knowing what happens. Who, upon seeing The Empire Strikes Back, could have known how the Vader/Luke lightsaber fight would turn out? Yet every duel here must end a certain way. It’s hard to deny that this takes out a lot of the magic, even if the choreography is more entertaining.

It’s a strong final chapter when reviewed against its weak series, but Revenge of the Sith just can’t recall the golden age of the Star Wars saga. It is solid, acceptable entertainment, but it is unspectacular and ultimately unmemorable – when future generations introduce their children to Star Wars, I suspect many of them will leave this one out.
