"“Look, it’s all completely chicken soup.”"
4 stars

Say you’re a card player. A really good card player. And the reason you’re so good is you read people really well. So, you and your buddies put up £100,000 so you, the genius card player, can get into an important game. A crooked game with crooked people. What happens next?

What happens next does not work out in your favor, my friend. A crooked game is just that, and if you aren’t aware of the circumstances you’ll be soon feeling the consequences.
The consequences for Tom and his fellow lads Soap, Bacon and Eddy in “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels” are less than pleasant, because on top of the 100,000 nickers they originally invested, they owe more thanks to a loan from the conniving opponent Hatchet Harry. Hatchet Harry is not the sort of man you want to cross, being a self proclaimed porn king and all around no-goodnik.
So, in order to keep all their digits intact, the boys come up with a plan. Or rather, they try to. They rather lack the depth of mental ability to come up with something brilliant.
But they try, and upon perusal of Tom’s neighbor’s conversations (the walls in this part of town are somewhat thin) they actually hatch something.

Sometimes it seems as though the whole thing is going to work, and then at other times you wonder why it’s stayed together for as long as it has, but you can’t fault it for being
predictable. You shouldn’t fault it for being unpredictable either.

You should just sit back, relax, and watch in wide eyed wonder as the whole thing unfolds. The cinematography is breathtaking in a way that doesn’t use advanced special
effects or sweeping shots of landscape. It uses the camera to make you feel what the characters are feeling, from a bit of stop motion here to a simple staggering and wobbling
Ahh, and the script. I wish that films everywhere could be this fast and sharp in the writing. Once you get into the swing of things, the only difficulty to overcome in the dialogue is corrected with subtitles. Yes, subtitles. English subtitles in a movie where the only language spoken is English. But it’s British English, not American English so the poor yanks have trouble understanding sometimes. Hopefully that won’t stop you from enjoying “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels”

With all that dialogue that just makes you want to be either shot or British, and the whole atmosphere that permeates the whole effort, the movie keeps pace with the best movies made anywhere, and should be treated as such. Oh, and one last thing. It’s been emotional.
