Scary Movie 4
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Doug Bentin

"My funny bone is getting harder to find."
3 stars

I’ve been sitting around all afternoon trying to figure out just why “Scary Movie 4” doesn’t work as well as it should. Part 3, the first one of the franchise handed over to director David Zucker after it was hoisted on its own penis jokes by the Wayans brothers, was pretty funny. At least, that’s how I remember it. Part 4 is amusing, but it’s not the knee-slapper I was hoping for.

Going into the plot is less than useless as it doesn’t really have one. The film is just a series of comic sketches inspired by the dishwater slate of horror movies that have haunted the googleplexes since Part 3 went to that great video rental store in the sky.

And that’s the answer to the dilemma—the parody isn’t particularly funny because the originals weren’t particularly scary. “The Village” wasn’t scary, and “War of the Worlds” wasn’t intended to be. Was it?

SM4 also pokes a finger into the bellies of “Saw” and “The Grudge,” but even with these the targets were too obvious to create sustained laughs. The stronger the source material, the stronger the burlesque, potentially at least.

The much underrated Anna Faris returns as Cindy Campbell, who finds disaster and horror wherever she goes but survives it all with the luck that seems to be granted to the extremely dim. Faris is a cute blond who plays unsupportable optimism beautifully, making Cindy a sort of sexless Little Annie Fanny of horror. Faris is particularly fun because she never lets on that she knows she’s in a silly movie.

Leslie Nielsen, who has an extended cameo as President Harris, is the master at this dead serious approach. Harris first hears that the earth is under attack by aliens while he is in an elementary school classroom listening to a little girl read a story about a duck. He wants to hear how the story ends before taking action, and then spends the rest of his time on screen worrying about the fictional fowl.

This is funny, in a painful sort of way, but, like the not-as-funny potshots taken at “Brokeback Mountain” and “Million Dollar Baby,” it has nothing to do with scary movies. Maybe, if there isn’t enough parody-able material in current horror films, it’s time to end the franchise.

Craig Bierko is also on hand to rip Tom Cruise’s performance in “War of the Worlds” and, more mercilessly, on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” His “I love her” routine is sharp as a knife but it goes on so long it wears out its welcome.

Regina Hall is funny as Cindy’s slutty friend, and a few laughs are to be found in bits by Michael Madsen, Cloris Leachman, Shaq, Dr. Phil, Charlie Sheen and Bill Pullman. Carmen Electra might have been funny as the blind girl from “The Village” but her jokes are far more painful than amusing.

I can give “Scary Movie 4” a pass, but not an unqualified recommendation. I think I’m just so desperate in 2006 for a farce that makes me laugh, I’ll accept anything that comes even close.
