Stick It
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Doug Bentin

"Not great, but not bad."
3 stars

“Stick It,” the new comedy set in the world of girls’ amateur gymnastics, does the seemingly impossible by bringing a whole new attitude to the rote formula of the personal-reconstruction-through-team-sports story. I know—I’m still not sure I believe it, either.

Missy Peregrym stars as Haley, a young woman who is the product of a troubled marriage. A few years ago, she shocked her teammates by walking away from a championship meet, thereby costing her group a gold medal.

Now she’s in trouble for practicing extreme bike riding at a construction site and breaking thousands of dollars worth of glass. It’s either be sentenced to juvie or do time with a gymnastics trainer whose reputation is worse than hers.

She shows up at the gym of Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges, doing an older, more cynical version of The Dude). Of course, they don’t like each other. Of course, there are girls in training there who don’t trust her. Naturally, she and the girls and Burt exchange verbal pot shots, and threatens to quit a few times but Burt shames her into returning to the fold so she can be online in time for the big tournament.

But here’s where Jessica Bendinger’s script slips the rails. It’s not perfect because the nature of the problem changes at this point. Up to the time of the championship event, the reason Haley abandoned her team at crunch time has been the film’s big McGuffin. We get to the bottom of that and all seems well again, as if naming something gets it under control. I wish.

But when the new problem becomes the antiquated and prissy rules for judging women’s gymnastic events—you can lose points if a bra strap shows accidentally—we see that the movie’s moral is an unexpected one.

Usually, these movies try to teach the young that conformity is a good thing, and that if you want to be liked you have to be like everyone else and play the game by established rules. “Stick It” tells your daughters that if the rules make no sense, flaunt breaking them. The film is honest enough to let the kids know that by flaunting, they will lose. It just suggests that defiance may be your only means of protest.

Bendinger is also the movie’s director, and she has some fun with the look of the sports movie. She makes gymnastics events look like they were filtered through a kaleidoscope. She enhances performance with CGI, and pumps up the rock volume.

Peregrym is good as Name, keeping up with the sardonic performance from Bridges. I like the way Burt, while maintaining the coach/student relationship, is able to work with this young woman at whatever place emotionally she is as any given time.

Boys in the audience may not get much from the screen beyond some good ogling time—there are lots of shots of teen females bending and stretching in leotards—but I think there’s more here than just flashy gymnastics stunts for female students of the sport. If it isn’t quite an adult film about young people relating in a nice way to an older guy, it is at least not painful for an adult audience.
